Book Reviews of Loving Frank: A NovelBook Review: A Passion Found Summary: 5 Stars
Loving Frank, purchased at Amazon.com, reminded me of the role so many women play: Second fiddle to their spouses. Thank God Mamah found her passion in time to claim her independence from the man she loved, Frank Lloyd Wright. All he wanted was to possess her. That old adage of letting the bird fly free and he will return to you is so true. Frank found that out, soon enough to love her until her untimely death. It looks like I really liked the book and to tell the truth, it was hard to put it down. I cried at the end.
Book Review: Beautifully Written...Thought Provoking Summary: 5 Stars
I devoured this book. The prose is gorgeous. The story is both controversial and thought provoking. Even by today's standards, it is a story that will have many wagging their tongues. Yet, I came to sympathize and care deeply about the main characters, even if I didn't always agree with the decisions they made. It provoked me to think about women's roles and choices, and how far we've come. After finishing the novel, I felt touched, wiser, and fulfilled having read it. It is now one of my all time favorite books.
Book Review: Best Book of the Year Summary: 5 Stars
"Loving Frannk" is a fascinating and well-written book that is a true story presented as a novel. I could not put it down. I was only vaguely familiar about FLW & Mamah's love affair and I had no idea how their story unfolded before reading this book. I found the period history about the women's movement around the world very interesting. The moral dilemmas Mamah faced in the early 1900's about marriage, children, career, true love, etc. are not unlike the ones women face today. This is a must read book!!
Book Review: Surprise Summary: 5 Stars
When a member of my book club suggested "Loving Frank: A Novel" for our next book study, I wasn't excited. But, very early in the reading of the book it was a very pleasant surprise to learn that I was loving the book.
The story of Mrs. Cheney and Frank Lloyd Wright's love affair is very intriguing as is the depiction of their individual characters. I found myself wishing I had met them personally. I am looking forward to our discussion of this book at next month's club meeting.
Book Review: Sensitive Portrayal of a Scarlet Woman Summary: 5 Stars
In this novel, Nancy Horan fleshes out the very little that is known about Mamah Cheney, the love of Frank Lloyd Wright's life. She paints an unflinching portrait of an intelligent woman dedicated to literature, the woman's movement, and Frank.
The story is very well written, and is perfect fodder for book club discussions, but I fear that most will feel as my book club did; They did not particularly like Mamah or her choices.
