Book Reviews of Loving Frank: A NovelBook Review: Wonderful Summary: 5 Stars
What a wonderful subject matter for a novel! It is clear that doing a biography with the material available would have been insufficent but Ms Horan found a way to make this tale fascinating.
Mamah is a finely chiseled portrait of a strong woman confronted with an equally strong Wright. The brutal ending of her life is well rendered, without the 'horror movie' effect I expected.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in F.L. Wright as an illuminating substitute (though partly fictionnal) to a short sequence of the renowned architect's life.
Book Review: great book Summary: 5 Stars
I am glad that I read The Women before reading Loving Frank. While The Women is about all four of the women in Frank Lloyd Wright's life, LF gives you an indepth portrait of Mamah Cheney, and her love of FLW. This book is much kinder to Mamah Cheney. It is also a much closer look at FLW himself, and how he thought about architechture, and how he would get an idea in his head and could just think for days before grabbing his pencil todraw. There are many in-depth reviews on the book, so I just wanted to add the comparison to another book that is current right now.
Book Review: Superb Historical Fiction! Summary: 5 Stars
Nancy Horan's done a masterful job of re-creating the world of Mamah and Frank! This book provides remarkable insight into the life and times of an intelligent woman at the very infancy of the "Woman Movement" in America, and an unforgettable look at the real Frank Lloyd Wright. Mamah is a particularly memorable character; frustrating at times, to be sure, but riveting nonetheless. Their love story- and it is not without warts- is believable and absorbing; their lives are fascinating. This book will leave you thinking (and Googling Taliesin, Mamah, and Frank!).
Book Review: Best book of 2008 Summary: 5 Stars
This book is my favorite read of 2008. I am not, however, an expert on Frank Lloyd Wright, but I'm not exactly sure why anyone would read a fictional book based on his life and be surprised when it's not all accurate? Anyway, the writer's style is excellent - flows beautifully. While it is a light read, it is full of debatable topics and interesting tidbits. I found myself researching a lot of this book, seeing what was factual and what was not. I was pleased with how much was factual. I just love this book and highly recommend it!
Book Review: Moving and tragic story. Summary: 5 Stars
This book started out a bit on the dry side. Halfway through, I was hooked. By the end of the book, I was crying. Nancy Horan weaves quite a tale that will hook you when you least expect it. The affair between Frank Lloyd Wright and Mamah Cheney was doomed almost from the beginning. After years of personal and professional struggle for both of them, they finally start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately, that is never to be. Be advised, this is a book with a depressing ending, but I am so glad I read it.
