Book Review: Does Love Make a Family?

"Love makes a family" originally started as a photo exhibition depicting gay,lesbian,transgender&bisexual families. The exhibition toured the US- and there were even different versions of it,one for kids,another for adults. It does beg the question- if it's so family-friendly&all about families,why did there have to be different versions? The exhibition faced controversy as it toured public libraries. Though it initially fanned the flames of controversy, its message came to be seen as ubiquitous. Gay parenting is more accepted than gay marriage;it's commonplace for same-sex couples to have children.
"Love makes a family" was the spoonful of sugar that made the medicine go down. One can sympathize with the families' struggles. It's not just the case of two men or two women raising children;there are also bisexuals and the transgendered. The book's philosophy can be summed up as-family is how you define it. A free-for-all. Granted,the photography is beautiful;in a sense,"Love makes a family" is a great queer parenting coffee table book. (However,the amount of text is daunting&at times intrusive)
"Love makes a family" shows how times have changed. Back when the exhibition traveled from coast to coast, from Boston to Portland, New York City to Dallas, people debated gay parenting. Now, a queer family is any other kind of family.
