Book Reviews of Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing AutismBook Review: Not the right spokesperson Summary: 2 StarsIf you are the parent of an autistic/Asperger's child, you are seeking information for treatment, and also value the shared experiences of others in your position. This is *not* the book for you, on either count. It has little technical content of any kind (mainstream or fringe) and is in dire need of an editor.
In the first half of the book we learn how truly FRANTIC and DESPERATE McCarthy is, and how she acts nasty to anyone who crosses her path. Her lavish use of profanity as punctuation reinforces this impression. She repeated plugs her other books, and makes comments that presume that we have read them, too.
Poor Jenny has to work three days a month, because "someone has to pay the bills," as she puts it. In this way, she strives (unsuccessfully) to connect with the common parent who is struggling to pay for the services she feels her child needs, in addition to the nanny she already employs for her sole child.
McCarthy essentially divides the medical community into black-and-white Good Doctor and Useless Evil Doctor camps. Instead of cooperating with her doctors and other service providers, she antagonizes many of them mercilessly. It is not in your child's interest to alienate any service provider, regardless of the quality you assign to them. This is ironic, since McCarthy reportedly began her nude modeling career to pay for nursing school.
I trust that her account of her child's convulsions is true enough, and that these episodes can be frightening. She is simply not the proper spokesman for this kind of tale.
Summary of Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism If someone you love is diagnosed with autism, LOUDER THAN WORDS is the first book you should read.
One morning, Jenny McCarthy was having a cup of coffee when she sensed something was wrong. She ran into her two-year-old son Evan?s room and found him seizing. In that moment, Jenny went from being the mother of an average toddler to being in the midst of a medical odyssey. Doctor after doctor misdiagnosed Evan until?after many harrowing, life-threatening episodes later?one amazing doctor discovered that Evan is autistic.
Though Evan finally had a diagnosis, Jenny didn?t know what to do next and she soon found herself alone without any resources except for her determination to help her son. Jenny eventually realized that she?d have to become a detective. She spoke with many doctors, parents, governmental agencies, private foundations, and essentially earned a Phd in ?Google Research.? At last, she discovered an intense combination of behavioral therapy, diet, and supplements that became the key to saving Evan from autism. And, now in this book, she creates a roadmap for parents who are concerned about their own child.
Jenny does more than just reveal the winning formula that worked for Evan. Her story shares the frustrations and joys of raising an autistic child and shows how with love and determination a parent can shape their child?s life and happiness.
