Book Reviews of Lose Your Mummy TummyBook Review: Hmmmmmm Summary: 2 Stars
I bought the book after realising I had severe "Mummy Tummy" (think a fist-width diastasis) which wasn't going away through diet and traditional ab exercises.
I heard about this book on a Mums' forum so purchased it (together with the DVD from Ms Tupler's own site).
Huge huge disappointment.
THe only reasons I am giving it two stars is that the information into what a diastasis is, how to self-diagnose and the whole "suck your gut in when you do anything" was pretty useful.
I didn't find the exercises difficult to follow (I cheated - I did get the DVD so could compare the pictures/instructions) but I did find it (and still do 14 months later) extremely unrealistic timewise and her attitude rather negative and off-putting.
Also the blurb claims that the programme is for mums no matter when we had our baby(ies) but, as another reviewer has already pointed out, the emphasis is very much on newly postpartum mums. Maybe I will go back to it once my child is at nursery - I will certainly have more time to faff about pulling in my transverse muscles then - for now I'll stick to my Peggy Brill core exercises as they have helped bring my diastasis to about 3 fingers (instead of 8) in about 3 months. Not perfect but they only take 20 minutes out of my day instead of an hour plus with e Tupler Technique. Sorry Julie but NOT my cup o' char.
Book Review: Just transverse ab work Summary: 2 Stars
I've been working out for years, and worked out throughout my pregnancy.
For someone who has some very basic experience with weight training and doing ab work, the only revelation in this book is the focus on working the transverse abs.
You needn't buy this book if you have worked out at even a lower level. Simply plug in "transverse abdominal exercises" in google and you'll get a number of sites which give you exercises for this part of the body on the web for absolutely free.
As for the author's contention that more traditional ab exercises, increase the size of the "Mommy Tummy", having checked with my phsyical therapist...not proven.
As for the book itself: The author suggests that it is "easy" to work in 500 reps of the transverse exercises she recommends per day..and this for a new mother! As a new mother, I was lucky to brush my teeth...even counting to 500 would have been beyound my sleep deprived, stressed out brain!
You can save yourself the cost of this book, and if you don't have time to look for exercises for the transverse muscles, by just "sucking in" your "gut" as many times a day as you can.
Book Review: Only good if you're an exercise freak Summary: 2 Stars
Julie Tupler's technique sounds good in theory, but you have to constantly have her exercises on your mind. The 'Tupler Technique' involves not only abdominal exercises, but everything from how to hold your baby or pick up your toddler to how to get yourself into and out of bed. A quote from the book- "one jackknife [going from a lying to sitting position by just sitting right up] can undo three weeks worth of exercises." With 2 kids under 3, I can barely remember to brush my teeth, much less remember how to "sneeze safely."
If you have the time and the memory- buy it; but if you're like most moms, don't bother.
And one more thing: don't buy this diastasis crap. While she is correct in saying that most moms have a diastasis, don't confuse your fat layers for bulging intestines.

Some of the exercises in this book were good but Tupler made a number of comments about the negative effects of some pilates exercises. The comments were inaccurate and showed that she had a very limited and incorrect understanding of that discipline. She commented that the Pilates hundred will cause diastasis of the abdominal muscles. When done correctly in a neutral pelvis this exercise will actually correct diastasis. It will only make it worse if it is practiced incorrectly. Her lack of knowledge on this subject, that she commented on over and over, really made me question her knowledge on everything else.
Book Review: A frustrating waste of money! Summary: 2 Stars
I exercise regularly, but found the instructions in this book difficult to follow, and the pictures were no help. I expected color pictures that matched the book cover, but the images inside the book are grainy photos of the author. Even with the pictures and instructions, I couldn't figure out some of the moves. So, I spent more money on the DVD and the recommended split. Huge waste of money! The DVD was more annoying than the book because the range of movements for the exercises is so small, it's really hard see what you should be doing.
