Book Reviews of Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger'sBook Review: "Woof" I loved it. Summary: 5 Stars
A young boy learns by trial and error to be a productive part of society. He overcomes many challenges (physical abuse from his drunk father, a mentally unstable Mother, difficulty with peers, later on in life he learns he has asperger's) and succeeds.
My favorite parts of the book were his "functional naming", pranks he plays on family members, teachers, co workers, and how he protects himself from snakes. I laughed out loud. I loved it. I hope to read more books by this author. His brother Augusten Burroughs is also an exellent story teller.
Book Review: This book is on target... Summary: 5 Stars
There are many clinical books telling you what you'll see from an Aspergerian, but this is the first book I've read that describes the world as THEY see it. It is fascinating, funny, and at times very sad, but John Elder calls himself a lucky survivor. So very true...I hope that I can make my son see his strengths as John has seen them. An excellent read for anyone living with Aspergians and Aspergians themselves.Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's
Book Review: So Little Bear's real name is Mary! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this book! As a mother with a daughter on the autistic spectrum I read everything I can find regarding the subject. I was previously aware of Augusten's works on his early family life. And I was happy to see that his brother, John Elder, had given an (all-to-rare) voice on what it is to be inside an Autism spectrum disorder. His story is inspirational and extraordinary. Hope he writes some more. And I wish him long life and happiness with his family and thank you for sharing your experience with the "outside" world.
Book Review: A really fun read Summary: 5 Stars
I found this book through Amazon's "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" and my interest was peeked when I read that he's the brother of Augusten Burroughs. I personally enjoyed this book more than Running with Scissors. I like looking into the mind of someone that thinks differently. I'm a slow reader, but I read through this on a 5 day vacation because I had a hard time putting it down.
Thank you John for sharing your story with us. I hope you have more to share in the future.
Book Review: Read my Mind Summary: 5 Stars
Look Me in the Eye is the kind of book that if you know anyone on the autistic or ADD spectrum you will have trouble putting it down before you've completely finished the book. The details are compelling; and John articulates his experience in a way that many of parents, friends and people with Asperger's cannot. His book, much like the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night, are good purchases for anyone trying to educated someone about having a family member with Asperger's.
