Book Reviews of Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's

Book Review: A wonderful book
Summary: 5 Stars

As the mother of 2 boys affected by autism (and a former special education teacher), I highly recommend this book. Mr. Robison gives us insight into his thoughts and feelings; and he does it brilliantly, with funny stories of his many adventures. What a treat for those of us whose loved ones are unable to communicate such things. My 11 year old saw the book and asked what I was reading, so I read him the "holes" story. He literally fell off his chair laughing(and has decided that "varmint" would be an excellent name for his little brother). When I told him that the author was affected by autism, my son said "Really? Do you think I could even be a famous author when I grow up?". I think any reader would find this book to be entertaining and insightful; in our family it also gave a sense of pride, inspiration, and hope for the future.

Book Review: A Wonderfully Poignant and Engaging Memoir
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was recommended to me by a family member. I ordered it because I think my husband may have Asperger's and hoped to understand AS better. It would have been very easy to finish the book in one sitting, but I found myself savoring every page, sometimes reading the pages or paragraphs twice. Mr. Robison has a way of expressing himself that is so refreshing and pure (A delightful gift of being an Aspergian!) His story is an amazing journey through so many frustrating, complex and uncertain attempts to understand what's "normal" and how to "fit in" with his family, friends and peers.I found myself enthralled by his resilience, intelligence and fortitude and his sense of humor made me cheer out loud for his successes. This book gave me a great insight to Asperger's and I salute Mr. Robison for sharing his story.

Book Review: More than just another book about Asperger's
Summary: 5 Stars

As a huge fan of author Augusten Burroughs (Running With Scissors, Dry, etc.), it wasn't until I met him at an event that I learned his brother John Elder Robison (who is mentioned in his books) also authored a book, so I ordered it immediately. The great thing about Look Me in the Eye is that it works on many levels: yes, it gives great insight into Asperger's, but Robison's balance of seriousness and levity make it an enjoyable read for anyone. Also, unlike many other books on Asperger's, it really emphasizes how folks with Asperger's have deep emotions just like anyone else, though they may not always be apparent on the surface. The book is full of adventure (he tours with the band KISS), and Robison's voice and strong sense of self really draw in the reader.

Book Review: A great book dealing with Asperger's
Summary: 5 Stars

A great book about Asperger's and succeeding despite being classified as being "different". Robison's life as a child and adult living with Asperger's is told with the unique insight only an insider to the condition has but he also fills this book with humor. Some of the later stories about how he relates to his son are very touching and poignant as well. This is a must-read for anyone living with someone with Asperger's or just interested in the subject. This is also a great companion-piece to go with his brother's book, "Running with Scissors." It is a very enjoyable, readable book but also full of interesting insights on Asperger's and so an easy way to be introduced to this subject. An overall good read!

Book Review: A must Have
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this book because I wanted/needed insight into how my son processes things. This book gave logic to what others see as illogical. It is empowering, enlightening, educational, and provides great insight into the mind of those with Asperger's. This book was so good I loaned it to my son's teacher who felt it was very educational and it gave her a look into how people with Asperger's and autism think. It is funny, it is educational and at time heartbreaking but a must read for those who are dealing with all the trials and joys of raising a child with Asperger's or high function Autism. After reading it you get this feeling of "now I understand".
