Book Reviews of Living in PanamaBook Review: Pretty darn complete! Summary: 4 Stars
Has about everything you would be looking for. I would get this "homey" version and the National Geographic book to make your trip complete.
Book Review: Very good overview - but dated Summary: 3 Stars
The book covers all the major topics a person needs to consider in moving to Panama, prior to a more detailed exploration in other sources. Information is, however, dated and needs to be freshened - always an issue in publications like this one.
If I had to rank it based on the three books I have purchased online, it would be in the middle.
There is a significant amount of information on hotels, restaurants, etc which can be very useful, but, once again, gets dated - along with prices.
There are also a number of very practical, every day "helpful hints" on living there to help newcomers with specific issues - like mold, ants, etc. In this respect it is much like the publications in many countries of the Newcomers Clubs (I helped write the one for Brazil when I was living there). These can be very valuable to people when they "hit the ground" and start living there.
A caveat in judging my review is that I have spent a lot of time researching moving to Panama and have assembled an extensive compilation of material from many sources that covers everything I want to know - a very thick file. In addition, I have bookmarked many pages on the Internet that I consult on specific topics. I also subscribe to various newsletters regarding Panama and have developed a correspondence relationship with people living there.
I bought the book (and others) to have one, mobile source of information to consult without digging through/lugging along my files. This is one I would take with me.
Book Review: Good info, but .... Summary: 3 Stars
As stated in the book, Panamanians do not like beards because they are like a mask.I find this hard to believe. Is this personal bias by the author? That makes me question some of the other info in the book. Lots and lots of links, some no longer current.
Book Review: lots of links Summary: 3 Stars
There are lots of links which may prove helpfull, but I would have rather had a bit more printed info than rely on linkls that are also advertising.
Once I've explored a few I hope the info will not be biased.
Book Review: Living in Panama Out of Date and Incorrect Doesnt Apply to Today Summary: 1 Stars
Sandra Synders book is so out of date nothing is correct in it. Panama has changed so much since this book was written 12 years ago. Nothing is correct in this book and Panama is nothing like what Sandra Synder portrays. This is a total waste of money. If you follow any of her advice you will be in so much trouble either in safety or expenses. Watch out on this book, better to burn you money than buy this book. Notice all of the reviews are Sandra's friends only no real readers who have actually purchased this book. The real readers usually throw this book away on arrival to Panama realizing it is a total waste.
Save your money, buying toilet paper is a better buy.
