Book Reviews of Live and Let Die (James Bond Novels)

Book Review: First-rate James Bond thriller
Summary: 5 Stars

This action-packed tale may be the best of Ian Fleming's 007 spy thrillers. The adventure has it all: a dashing hero, tense situations and close shaves, voodooism, exotic locales, racially-drawn battle lines, a pretty damsel in distress and cold-blooded killers under the tight control of a brilliant but malevolent agent of the Russian spy network SMERSH. The discovery of gold coins in Harlem has aroused the interest of the British and American intelligence services and Mr. Bond is dispatched to solve the mystery of where they came from and who is smuggling them from Jamaica to the Florida gulf coast. Simon Vance narrates the book expertly, taking the listener on a journey into a dark world of spy intrigue through Harlem, St. Petersburg, and finally, the northern coast of Jamaica. Vance gives each character his or her own personality and blends them all together into a wonderful tapestry of thrilling suspense.

Book Review: i'm impressed, can't say that this came as a shock though
Summary: 5 Stars

i thouhgt this book was excellent. it moves around a lot, taking you from the top of the east coast of America (harlem, ny) to the bottem (st. petersburg fl.) and then on to jamaica. there are absolutely no gadgets in this book but who cares, Bond pulls of some cool stuff on his own. the bond girl in this one (solitaire) is one of the coolest ever, she reads minds a little, not to mention she's beautiful. man, what happens to felix leiter though will make you sad. but it ends very well, and i've noticed that these books tend to make you want a stiff drink, a cocktail, and a cigarette by describing expensive mixed drinks and taking deep lungfuls of smoke. over all this book was way cool, oh and don't worry while you read it, you will hate the villain in this, he gets whats comming to him and then some.

Book Review: Forget the Movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

The last James Bond to come even CLOSE to Ian Fleming was Thunderball. Ever since, the only thing in common with the Fleming novel's was the title. Readers of Live and Let Die will scratch their heads and wonder WHY Bond doesn't run across the heads of alligators. A good description of 50's Harlem, and how close friends Bond and Leiter are is revealed.
There are several story-lines in this book that carried over to the Bond movies. Bond and Soliatire being dragged through the ocean is duplicated in For Your Eyes Only. Leiter being eaten by a shark, and Bond's retaliation is duplicated in License Renewed. Each Bond novel refers to the previous one. Leiter refers to Casino Royale. Live And Let Die is referred to in ? You need to read that one! Moonraker.

Book Review: One of Bond's Best
Summary: 5 Stars

I agree with most of the other reviewers. This is a great read. In fact, all of Ian Fleming's Bond books are great escapist fiction, perfect for the beach.

I have a question about the "racial stereotyping." Why is it racist or stereotyping to portray characters as they really are? Blacks in Harlem and Jamaica speak with the same dialects that Fleming uses in the novel. No matter how politically correct today's culture may want to be, the facts are facts.

Book Review: Richly Textured Novel
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of Ian Fleming's best James Bond novels. It is richly textured, well written, clearly defines the Bond character and has survived not only as good literature but a great period piece of NYC's unseen night life of the 50s. Clearly, we get a vision of a much worldlier Bond than we saw in CASINO ROYALE. We see James Bond easily adapting to any locale or situation. He is both innovative and resourceful. This is a very good Bond novel. Great retro cover too!
