Book Reviews of Little Miss Spider

Book Review: Our daughter's "first" and most beloved book...
Summary: 5 Stars

From the time we discovered we were pregnant, we were collecting books, books, and more books - until, by the time our daughter was born we had an entire bookcase full of our most treasured childhood reading memories - plus a number of new ones. As first-time parents we hadn't realized just how disinterested our daughter would be in actually being read to, as she favored cramming pages into her mouth where they would become a gooey mess. Board books didn't fare much better, as the pages didn't feel the way she expected, or turn as easily as she desired.

So when I ran across this copy of Little Miss Spider - the one with the semi-laminate pages - in a thrift store, I bought it in the hopes it would satisfy her multitudes of needs in a book. To my great pleasure it did, and then some. The illustrations are bright, bold, and captivating, even to a 6-month old. The rhythm of the story appeals to her, and she never seems to tire of our reading it. She'll sit for long stretches just turning the pages and admiring the paintings, and yet the book has fared remarkably well in the not-so-cautious hands of an infant. And frankly, I find the story to be very sweet. The characters, for a short children's story, are memorable, and full of personality.

That said, I always find it interesting how people can take a perfectly good story and over-complicate it. No child reading this or being read to is going to dwell on the deeper meaning of the line:

"For finding your mother, there's one certain test.
You must look for the creature who loves you the best."

Nor will he or she then turn to question the love of his or her own parents, and if perhaps the adoptive life would be grander. It's silliness really, and we could ban all children's books on these sort of overreactions.

I find this to be a lovely book and probably enjoy reading it nearly as much as my daughter enjoys having it read to her. I would highly recommend it to children and infants alike.

Summary of Little Miss Spider

When Miss Spider pops out of her egg, surrounded by brothers and sisters scurrying about, her mother is nowhere to be found - but kind Betty the Beetle is there to fill the role. "Just right for preschoolers or beginning readers, this reassuring story, complete with a surprise ending, is a charmer." - School Library Journal
How did the beloved Miss Spider begin her life as a spiderling? In this engaging prequel to David Kirk's Miss Spider books, the spider starlet herself has just popped out of her egg and is wondering where her mother could be.

"Did she squeeze down a hole?
Or dive underwater?
Why won't she come out here
And meet her new daughter?"
Little Miss Spider's plaintive cries are heard by a passing beetle, who offers her kind assistance. The search continues, and suddenly our heroine finds herself in harrowing danger. Will the one who loves her best save her in time?

Each book in Kirk's bestselling series, including Miss Spider's ABC and Miss Spider's New Car, explodes with brilliant, glossy color and charming personality. His shiny close-up oil paintings catch young readers like insects in a web (but with much happier results). Adopted children and those in nontraditional families may take extra pleasure in the message this flashback story proffers: your mother is the creature who loves you best--whomever that may be. (Ages 3 and older) --Emilie Coulter
