Book Review: It's not how you fall its how you get up

In MMA you hear the phrase "It's not how you fall it's how you get up" repeatedly. I think Jens embodies this phrase more so than any other athlete I can recall in MMA. Considering his youth and his alcoholic father MMA is almost a walk in the park for Jens. Fighting with gloves and a ref seems so tame after the battles chronicled in this book. I can't imagine having a gun in your mouth and your father telling you "You aren't worth the bullets". The psychological toll this must have taken on Jens is unimaginable.
Even after Jens used wrestling to get a scholarship to Boise State and get away from his father and the abuse, he fell again and hard. Eventually Jens hit rock bottom getting kicked out of school and sent back to Seattle was a set back lesser men would have not been able to overcome. This two year plan of getting back to Boise State living in a bad part of town and having to deal with his father and brother again must have been utter hell.
The thing I took away from the book is even with all Jens success in UFC and MMA was his quote relating to a 17 year old boy dying of cancer "Because of him, I'd taken time out from my relentless quest and learned the important lesson that it's the small things in life that matter most."
What a great story. In the end I thought I was going to get a bio of Jens life and rise to UFC champion, and I did. However, I got so much more of an appreciation of how easy I had it growing up an appreciation for the phrase "it's the little things that matter most".
