Book Reviews of Light on Yoga: Yoga DipikaBook Review: Light on Yoga - Light on life Summary: 5 Stars
This book is excellent for a Yoga student who wants to start practicing at home. I used to practice Yoga with a teacher in the last 5 years, and I bought this book when I decided to start practicing at home daily. The book was extremely helpful. In addition to the huge number of positioned that are explained, the book include a large number of classes in the form of a sequence of positions+times. In the last 6 months I was using these proposed classes with very good results. This is the book that should accompany you when you do the transition to practicing at home more frequently. I still go to the Iyengar Yoga center in New York once a week - there is no replacement for great teachers. However, for those of us who wants to practice more often than once or twice a week this book is the best companion
Book Review: Enlightening Summary: 5 Stars
I learnt yoga through another teacher. I wanted to use this as a reference book. Well, as it turned out it was not a reference, but the bible. All nuances which I missed while learning are clearly mentioned. Exact details of the postures involved along with photographs are clearly shown here. This book has helped me beyond my imagination. It is also very well patterned because, it tells you what is the posture and its characteristics. The steps involved. References to related postures and ultimately, the effects and precautions. Throughout the book, he has mentioned that a guru's presence is very important. It should not be ignored. It is better to take some classes first and after that, this is the only book you will ever need. The postures are given in the sequence of easiest to the most difficult. All in all, THE BOOK.
Book Review: the Definitive Authority Summary: 5 Stars
My mom recommended this book to me as "the definitive authority" on yoga. Iyengar is one of the original teachers who brought yoga to the west, and you can tell by the way he explains everything. It's a serious textbook though, it's not for a casual person who's just interested in flexibility. There's amazing pictures and detailed descriptions of the philosophy behind a yogic lifestyle, including background on the 8 limbs of yoga, but most of all Iyengar describes how to get into each asana properly, including proper breathing technique, where your weight should be balanced, where you should feel a stretch, when you should/should not do different asanas...Light on Yoga is best for someone who wants to dig deeper into yoga and learn about the total package. I would agree with my mom, it's the definitive authority.
Book Review: This book will last you a lifetime Summary: 5 Stars
This amazing book is a wealth of information that keeps on giving. The more you explore, experience and learn about yoga, the more this book has to offer. Mr Iyengar always offers a little something new every time you read him,and the hundreds of photos are a superb illustration of some very difficult concepts. Not a cover-to-cover read, but instead you should keep this book handy as you will benefit from frequent reference. If you are interested in the philosophy of yoga, the introduction is amazing and gets better every time you read it. Although this book may be a bit sophisticated and detailed for a beginner, it is second to none as a tool of ongoing reference and inspiration. Years into my practice I am still inspired by it and often give this book as a gift.
Book Review: Throws real light on yoga - with no mumbo-jumbo ! Summary: 5 Stars
This is truly a book for those who wish to achieve balanced health of body and mind. Far, far superior to Dr Deepak Chopra's works on 'Quantum Healing', 'Ageless Body, Timeless Mind' and other such pap.
The author, BKS Iyengar, is a superb advertisement for his own theories, ideas, teachings: he is, I think, something like 80-odd years of age, but he still has the constitution, stamina, energy, appearance of a VERY healthy and athletic forty-year-old.
There's absolutely no mumbo-jumbo in the book, it reflects the life-experience of a marvellously analytical, modern scientific mind exploring the ancient wisdoms about the human body and mind.
A true classic. Deserves to be amongst the Great Books of the Century.
