Book Reviews of Light My FireBook Review: Friendships/Love Summary: 5 Stars
"Light My Fire" was an informatative book on the life of Jim Morrison and The Doors. Ray has a way of writing that draws you into his own life, and then at the same time explains what he is thinking about breaking into music world. He has an enormous love for Jim, John, and Robby, and of course his wife Dorathy, what a huge heart! He explained what really happened, nothing like the Oliver Stone movie. "The Doors" movie had nothing to do with what really happened (as I am finding out from the three books I have read about the Doors so far). Ex: At Warhol party I could not see Jim's band mates leaving him there when he (Jim) begged them to stay. Still I like the movie because, as I read in another book, it's the "longest music video", of course GREAT music!! Ray was there while all this wonderful music was being made, the ups and downs of making it in this world.
Book Review: A guide through the doors, but not a doorman Summary: 5 Stars
Ray Manzarek's perspective of The Doors is one that offers us a glimpse into a room that many of us have up til this point watched through the hallway. In his book he gives us the real Jim Morrison, a man who struggled with an internal duality of timeless poet, and madman named "Jimbo." If there is anyone that knew Jim Morrison, it was Ray Manzarek, and to many of us who were not around, he is the one who can lead us to the real Jim Morrison. The anecdotes of the book are amazing, and give us the development of the band and of the times. I'm just waiting for the film graduate to make the movie from the book so that he can dethrone the one made by Oliver Stone a few years ago, which was a sensationalized , and otherwise hollow movie.
Book Review: This is Ray's version Summary: 5 Stars
I am kind of glad that Ray wrote this book. I feel more like it's Ray's Biography, and I respect that. I did enjoy this book. This book talks about Ray's begging, middle (which includes Morrison), and near end. There were some nice little facts that no one else talked about. It also collides against Stone's movie (stating inaccuracies, and basically taking several strikes at Olive Stone personally). I do recommend this book. It gives you another side and basically a lesson that I was not ready for in my life but needed to be said (It's over, whatever happened...happened). So...yeah...I did enjoy this book and it did help me grow a little more.
-Thanks
Book Review: Love the Fire Summary: 5 Stars
I read the book front cover to back flap and loved every word in between. Ray beautifully tells of his loving friendship with front man Jim Morrison (or "Jimbo", Morrison in his drunken state). Ray gives insight into life with the doors, there background, and their hopeful future. Ray sometimes goes on humurous rants, which I LOVE! He rips Oliver Stones to shreds, while still remaining poised and intellectual. Through out the book a love story emerges about Ray and his beautiful wife Dorothy (whom I myself, as a Japanese women, found myself falling in love with her as well!) A great read!!
Book Review: Manzarek Rocks Summary: 5 Stars
This is the best book on The Doors I've read, by far, and I've read most all from Patricia K's self-centered, obsessive effort to Danny Sugarman's work. Manzarek is open, honest and doesn't pull any punches. He is not nearly as egotistical or obsessed with Morrison as Kennealy was and speaks as an insider from the origin to the end of The Doors. I found this book inspirational.
