Book Reviews of Life and Death in Shanghai

Book Review: How glad I am to live in a civilised world.
Summary: 5 Stars

This book shows that if you have faith and conviction on your side you are able to withstand allmost anything that is thrown at you. This great lady suffered the most terrible torture that could be inflicted on a mother, to be denied the right to have contact with her only daughter. She lived for more than six years in a place we in the west would call Hell. The only comfort she had was knowing that she had never committed any of the crimes that she was accused of. A shining light for all of us when it comes to the time when we have to stand up and be counted for our principles. I have never read a book that moved me so much as this. A masterwork, a book that you should have in your collection for all time.

Book Review: Hope, it sustains life.
Summary: 5 Stars

Life and Death in Shanghai paints a horrific picture of China during the cultural Revolution. Any book portraying the deaths of so many innocent people is disturbing. Perhaps what gives the book its ultimate potency is that Nien Cheng writes from experience. Her characters are more than real. We are saddened by the death of her daughter, but at the same time, her fight for survival, her will to live gives us courage to keep to our hopes and to look towards the future. This autobiography stresses on the importance of hope. One catch is that some parts get too "historical" and slow down the pace of the novel, so much so that at the end, you feel you have accomplished great feats

Book Review: Great tale of heroism
Summary: 5 Stars

Nien Cheng's story is one of bravery in the face of sadistic treatment at the hands of China's cultural revolution. Nien Chieng was the wife of the head of Standard Oil of Shanghai China. As such she was hassled by the running dog Chinese as a western imperialist. The cultural revolution is Stalinism taken to it's most grotesque extreme. People who needed reeducation were forced to sit in a room and be denounced by their neighbors or paraded around the town with a dunce cap. After the revolution Mao Tse Tung's wife and the other members of the infamous Gang of Four, who lead this revolution within a revolution, were put on trial by the Chinese regime.

Book Review: Triumph of the Human Spirit
Summary: 5 Stars

This may be one of the most important books I have ever read. The lessons within its pages are as much about a period of history in China as they are about the power and strength of the human character. I bought the book as one of many to provide me with insight into China's recent history and what I took away was so much more than that. Nien Cheng sets the bar high for standards of integrity, discipline and commitment to the self. I am grateful she shared her painful, though triumphant, story with the world. This should be required reading for anyone interested in Chinese culture, but also for anyone who welcomes inspiration to overcome life's hardships.

Book Review: Showed the Light to the Truth
Summary: 5 Stars

When I read this book, I was amazed at what Communism did to China. I am originally from Ukraine. I left a year after the USSR fell appart. I was too young to really know what the effects of Communism had on my family. After reading this Life And Death, I started to understand so much better why my parents hated it so much. Communism really seems to ruin a lot of peoples lives and even after the communist party falls, instead of everything getting better, it becomes even more chaotic. I commend Nien Cheng for surviving her ordeal and not giving up with her life even after she knew that her daughter died. She is an example to all man kind.
