Book Review: Bible study made simple

The Bible has changed my life as far as I've been able to understand it. I wanted to get the most out of what I was reading, but until 2008 I hadn't found an edition that resonated with me as much as this has. My best friend showed me this edition, and I bought one of my own. Despite easily tearing several pages and having a few issues with the footnotes, I'm glad I bought it. It makes Bible reading and comprehension simpler than ever before, and with plenty of footnotes to clarify confusing passages, it's a smooth and easy read.
What I especially love is that it makes sense to me. It provides plenty of details that make sense out of the confusing parts. Each book contains a short introduction that includes a modern analogy, a background, and key verses and people. A lot of key people in the Bible have short biographies that show us who they were and what role they played in history. Most of the verses have footnotes that offer modern perspectives on the writers' thoughts, which makes things even easier to understand.
The only issue I have is that it tries to drive points home a little too hard. About two-thirds of the footnotes end with sentences like "Do you have any secret sins in your life?" "Be saved today!" and "How much are you giving your life to Jesus Christ?" Plus, many of these footnotes just repeat verses in modern English without adding any perspective. The content is fine and applicable, but the way it's presented is a little too preachy.
Overall, the edition is an easy translation to read and understand, and its insights and footnotes are applicable. Aside from a relatively minor disappointment, the substance and translation are clear, and it's a study Bible that I'm glad to recommend. Just be sure to handle the pages with care and take a few of the footnotes with a grain of salt.
