Book Reviews of Letter to a Christian NationBook Review: Pro-life arithmetic Summary: 5 Stars
One priceless gem (among many) that Sam Harris presents is the critique of the pro-life belief that a soul (person) is created at the instant of conception. Is an additional soul created when a 100-cell blastocyst occasionally divides to become identical twins? Does each twin get half a soul, do they share a single soul, or is one twin left without one? When two blastocysts occasionally combine to form a chimera, does this freak occurrence result in a person with two souls? The central pro-life belief does not add up with observable biological facts.
Book Review: Sam Harris is the "God" of atheists (pun intended) Summary: 5 Stars
I've read and heard them all: Dawkins, Dennett, Hitchens. While all are great in their own ways, Harris has, in my opinion, the best arguments for the "non" existence of God. (His analogies are not only funny but spot on)
This is a great book (or letter as he calls it) for any and all alike. I plan to give this to a few Christian friends.
After reading this short treatise, I came up with a quote: "We all use the same words, some of us are just better at arranging them." I apply this to Mr. Harris wholeheartedly.
Book Review: A Compact Critique of Religion and Christianity Summary: 5 Stars
This is a must read.
Sam Harris condenses his argument down to bare bones, especially for those who don't have the time or the inclination to go through the more nuanced arguments presented in larger works such as "The God Delusion" (Richard Dawkins), "Breaking the Spell" (Daniel C. Dennett), and "The End of Faith" (Sam Harris).
Even if you've read the more detailed essays mentioned above, there is perhaps no substitute for the sheer uncompromising nature of the stockpile of ammunition contained in this urgent little book.
Book Review: A very nice companion guide to countering fundamentalists' attacks Summary: 5 Stars
All the arguments that are presented in this book are sound. (Not that people cannot argue with them but their reasoning or support for counter-arguments are shabby, faulty, and fragile)
Unlike his previous book Harris uses more of a conversational tone that flows very well and reads very well. He also focuses very much on social issues that are created solely because of theists interfering with public affairs and trying to influence social behaviors.
Anybody can read this and understand his arguments. Highly recommended.
Book Review: Eye Opening Summary: 5 Stars
This small book is vital reading for anyone who wishes to unmask the deep-seeded myths that cause so much violence and suffering in the world. If we do not do so, we will be doomed to repeat the same mistakes, only then the cost will be much higher with weapons of mass destruction so readily available. I also highly recommmend Harris' first book, "The End of Faith, Religion, Terror, and the Future of Reason". This is a more in-depth examination of faith and its pitfalls. Harris articulates what many of us are feeling, but are reluctant to say.
