Book Reviews of Letter to a Christian NationBook Review: Every sentence packs a punch Summary: 5 Stars
This is probably my favorite book I've read on the subject of religion, and I've read over half dozen so far.
Sam Harris boils down what someone else might spend several pages on into a handful of sentences that pack so much of a punch they might leave your nose bloody.
When I read books that are critical of religion, I tend to find at least two or three things I disagree with. This book is the only exception I've come across. It may be different for you. But I honestly can't think of anything in this book that someone could honestly say isn't true, or at least supported by an intimidating amount of evidence.
Everyone should read this book.
Book Review: A sound logical book for rational people Summary: 5 Stars
This is a well written book that touches on many of the ways that religion is interfering with education and public policy and why we shouldn't tiptoe around that simply because it is religion and should not be scrutinized or questioned. Read this book if you are committed to honesty and are unafraid of finding out the facts. If you believe that you must believe what you have been taught even if there is scientific evidence against it, don't bother to read this, you will just froth at the mouth and feel the need to defend your omnipotent god. This is a simple book to read but not a simple book to take unless you are willing to face facts.
Book Review: validation on every page Summary: 5 Stars
Yes. Yes. Yes. This book is a quick read and elegantly points out the serious flaws in religious principles. Sam Harris neatly defends the atheist viewpoint in a way that should convert all religious readers away from their worship and to the side of rational thinking. As one reviewer put it, It's just simply preaching to the choir. I think that is mostly true, as those who spend a great deal of their time and resources supporting unproven mystical Gods are not going to read this book, or be easily swayed into believing common sense ideals. Nevertheless, I truly enjoyed this book and the validation it gave me on every page.
Book Review: Thought-provoking and eye-opening Summary: 5 Stars
As a once devout Christian, I wish I'd found this book much sooner after leaving the church. Harris does a wonderful job of pointing out all of the problems with the church, its mindset, and the hypocrisy of picking and choosing which parts of the bible you want to follow. He makes harsh and concise points concerning abortion, suffering, and all of the sticky areas that Christians like to talk around instead of addressing. I didn't find it to be hateful, instead I was stunned at the truth of his words and wondered why I didn't see any of these issues in the church earlier. A favorite of mine, easily read in a couple of hours.
Book Review: Required Reading Summary: 5 Stars
I believe this book should be required reading by 7th grade!! Sam Harris is straight forward, eloquent, and convincing (though in my case he was preaching to the choir). The religious elements in this country who are trying to foist a Theocracy on their countrymen, are deluded and dangerous. No wonder our enemies hate us and our friends think we are schizophrenic. We were not founded as a "Christian Nation" and, no matter how many times the christian fanatics ascert that is what the men who framed the Constitution intended, they are wrong. The Constitution was framed as it is precisely to protect us from a Theocracy.
