Book Review: Refreshing and inspiring!

"Let Go" is a grace filled, refreshing book for women. Walsh's writing is very encouraging, reminding women that God's grace is fresh every day, despite our tendency to give our worries and fears over to him only to continually take them back again. We all long to be set free, whether it's from difficult circumstances, past events, unforgiveness, recurring habits, fear, loneliness, etc. She reminds us that "God is not a Scout leader or etiquette coach...his love for us is not based on our behavior...it's based on his heart and his character." She also points out that it's much easier to extend grace to others when we are satisfied with God's grace ourselves. Next, she moves into specific reasons we have trouble letting go and addresses them Biblically. For example,
Ch. 3 addresses the tendency to live in the past, Ch. 4 fleshes out the importance of looking ahead, Ch. 5 takes a look at bitterness, and Ch. 6 tackles shame. I enjoyed the discussion of temptation. Walsh points out that whatever form the temptation takes, the common thread will be the amount of time and energy it requires. Satan's strategy is to preoccupy us with ourselves so we're not preoccupied with God. Temptation usually comes in one of three areas: satisfying immediate felt needs, finding an easy way out of suffering, or giving in to charisma over character. Each of these is discussed in light of Satan's tempting of Jesus. She repeatedly encourages her readers to simply embrace what God has already done for us and rest in him rather than trying so hard to do everything right, which makes us focus on ourselves and our shortcomings rather than him. I found the book truly encouraging, and especially enjoyed the quotes at the beginning and the reflection questions and prayer at the end of each chapter. Walsh has a beautiful heart for God and it shines through clearly in her writing. This would be a great book to read and discuss with a group of friends.
