Book Reviews of Les Hommes, Vol. 2Book Review: The Gallery On Main Street by Christiane France Summary: 5 Stars
The book has a strange feeling, like a river which flows without interruption, sure of its target at the end of the path.
Martyn is an easy-to-go gay guy; he has yet no decided what to do in his life, and maybe he is counting a bit too much in the inheritance from his late Uncle Jack. But when the legacy occurs, it's bounded: he can't sell the Antiquity shop of his Uncle Jack for at least 10 years, and meantime he has to co-managed it with the other partner, the up-tight Simon.
From the first time he saw Simon, Martyn is attracted by the man, but they are like oil and water, they can't mix. There is something in Simon that irresistibly draws Martyn, but at the same time, when he is near the man, they seems to bounce off like opposite magnets. The something happens, Martyn suddenly decides that, instead of repel the man, he would like to go nearer to him, and from a dinner to a sunday spent working together, they find each other in an almost matrimonial routine.
Probably the main contrast issue in the story is Simon and Martyn's differences. Martyn is a young man still in that phase of life when he is not sure of what he would like to do as an adult, and instead Simon is arrived to the phase in which he wants to settle down and tighten some free ends. But after they overcome this problem, all the other aspects of their life match in a very smooth way, and nothing else prevent them to walk together hand in hand toward an happily ever after: I can really image these two, the emblem of the happy gay couple, two handsome antiquarians living peacefully together with a cat they treat like their baby.
This is a quite enjoyable short story, less than 45 pages, good if you want to rest and relax for a bit.
Summary of Les Hommes, Vol. 2(Gay / Anthology / Collections / Contemporary / Historical / Interracial / Multicultural / Exhibitionism / Public Places) In Les Hommes, Vol. 2, after inheriting his uncle's share of an antique store, Martyn is forced to work with a man he dislikes and figures the feeling is mutual; Adam and Domenic find that coming out takes considerably more than just opening the closet door; and it's only after he meets Honey that the Marquis de Vernnay discovers what he really wants out of life. Previously available only in electronic format, these three stories of gay erotic romance have now been combined for a paperback edition! Included are the tales......The Gallery On Main Street (Martyn Cole doesn't like his late uncle's business partner, and he knows the feeling is mutual. Trouble is, he wants Simon Deschamps as badly as he suspects Simon wants him, and when the terms of his uncle's Will force them to work together, Martyn knows he must either figure a way to redirect his emotions elsewhere, or deal with them head on. After deciding on the direct approach, Martyn calls Simon, says they need to talk, and suggests they have dinner together. The restaurant Martyn had in mind, however, is closed, so Simon takes him to a nearby gay club. Martyn isn't sure what to expect, but just as he gives up hope of the evening developing beyond dinner and a drink, things take a definite and exciting turn as the lights dim, the music is turned up, and Simon draws Martyn into his arms and onto the dance floor.)......Some Place Only We Know (Adam Carstairs and Domenic Morton are both trapped in the closet. Adam because he's never found the courage to do more than wonder whether or not he's gay, and Domenic because he fears being disowned by his family. The pair meet at the local hospice where Adam is a volunteer, and Domenic is visiting his older brother who has been badly injured in an auto accident. The day Domenic learns his brother is not likely to recover, he and Adam go for a walk on the Niagara Escarpment. The weather closes in, and when they're caught in a freak snowstorm, they shelter in an abandoned cottage where they take the opportunity to explore their feelings for one another. When Adam awakens the following morning to find Domenic gone, however, and a note saying he needed to return to the hospice, Adam figures Domenic used his brother's condition as an excuse to disappear. Adam feels used and abused and hopes never to see Domenic again. But when Domenic turns up at Adam's bookstore and explains what happened, can the men pick up where they left off?)......A Taste Of Honey (Antoine Auguste, Marquis de Vernnay, is twenty-four and bored. Bored with women at the house he frequents on la rue Charles V, and bored with the elaborate rituals and devices he must use in order to achieve an orgasm. But then he meets Honey at an exclusive men's club, and has his first sexual experience with another man. One taste of this beautiful, young creole man with the golden skin and Antoine's life is forever changed. Honey is the only person he can think about and the only person he wants. Honey, however, is a servant of the lowest class, and also the property of another man. Can Antoine discover a way he can separate the two and keep Honey all to himself?)
