Book Reviews of Left Behind: A Novel of the Earth's Last Days (Left Behind No. 1)Book Review: A Must-Read for Christians and Non-Christians Alike Summary: 5 Stars
First off, I want to say that I am not by any means an avid reader. I hardly ever read, and the only reason I picked up this book was because of my intense interest in the end times.
I got this on my last day at hume lake (I highly recommend all you Christians go to enhance your relationship with God, and that all you Non-Christians and Atheists go to possibly form a relationship with God). I got the last spot there (I didn't even have to camp out the night of signups--yay for me!!!). And while I had my doubts, and was nervous, I had a lot of fun, and am thinking of going back next year. Anyway, I was in the bookstore a lot up there and read a lot of books about the end times (including a few by Tim LaHaye, the writer of this series FYI, just in case you didn't know). On the last day, I decided to get this book. I started reading it on the bus when we were going home, and...
...I loved it!!! I just finished the book a few days ago, and I must say that I love it. Basically, for those of you who don't know, here is the plot outline of the book (made from the info I got while reading the book).
While on a flight to London, an airline pilot known as Rayford Steele is flying a 747 Plane. During this seemingly ordinary day and flight, little did the world know that they were about to experience one of the most cataclysmic and apocalyptic events the world has ever seen. In the blink of an eye; under a second, people all over the world vanish, leaving only their clothes behind in a pile. In that second, chaos is unleashed all over the place. Cars whose drivers dissapeared spun out of control all over, causing mass destruction on the highway. Everyone on the plane is confused. Rayford, who has been neglectful to his wife, has started hitting on a flight attendant, known as Hattie Durham. Just then, she comes rushing in, telling him what happened. He has his co-pilot take over while he investigates this. It turns out it is just as he feared--it did happen. And what's worse is that his wife and son are gone, too!!! The only immediate family member still around is his college-age daughter, Chloe. People everywhere have theories as to why a massive group of select people could dissappear and leave their clothes behind. Theories erupt everywhere. People blame it on everything from Alien Abduction to literally disappearing into midair. But Rayford's wife told him about how God's son, Jesus, would sometime take his people (Christians) to the clouds and into heaven within the blink of an eye, while the rest are left behind. Rayford believes this to be true. He is scheduled to go back to Chicago, as he is told not to go to his destination or land there. He goes back home and notifies his daughter about this. The first thing he does is panic, but later goes to a church where 2 staff members are left behind--a secretary and a pastor. Yes, pastors can be left behind. But how did he get left behind? He had been a good person, he had led others to Christ and encouraged those people to tell others, but he had never bothered to do the most important thing--accept Jesus into your heart to have a relationship with him. Rayford goes to this pastor and gets a video from him that the former pastor recorded for future purposes. Rayford went home and watched it and then accepted Christ with the visual help of the former pastor. Chloe is at first reluctant to watch it, and even think about Jesus. But nevertheless, some people are starting to think that this was the Rapture; the taking up of Jesus' people (once again, Christians) into heaven in an instant.
Meanwhile, a famous writer, who was aboard Rayford's flight, was left behind. His name is Cameron Williams (known as Buck by most). A few of his friends are killed. This causes him to think that he is being hunted down. Then, along with his boss, Steve, he and the writing company he works for go to investigate the new president of Romania, who is a very nice and powerful man, who also seemed to come out of nowhere. They get to know him and meet with him, as does Hattie Durham, who has become a new friend of Buck's (sort of).
After a while, the pastor who has been left behind, named Bruce Barnes, is starting to suspect that this new Romanian Leader, named Nicolae Carpathia, may be the charismatic leader of the end times; the Antichrist. Rayford, Chloe, and Buck eventually get together. Chloe decides, with her father's help, to accept Christ. Buck later does the same on his own. For a while now, Rayford has been going to church, and now, Bruce wants to form a small group of people, whose job it is to help people learn about and eventually accept Christ into their hearts during these times. They also find out that there is a 7-year period, known as the Tribulation, is coming their way. Everyone, including newcomer Christians, will have to endure some of the most painful years of their life, as well as the most dramatic time the world has ever known. With 2 men at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem preching to people (who have also struck down 2 of their attackers without any physical force) and getting them to accept Jesus (suspected to be 2 of Jesus' 144,000 witnesses who help others to accept Jesus in the end times), along with Nicolae Carpathia rising to power, forming a global village, and witnessed by Buck working supernatural powers upon people, it is clear that these are going to be the most painful years the world has ever experienced.
So in short, this is an apocolyptic fiction telling about what is to come sometime in the future. I have a question for you. If the rapture were to happen right now, do you know where you would be? I know where I would be. In heaven. If you don't know Jesus and haven't accepted him into your life, I recommend you seek help by going to church, reading the Bible, and going to weekly Bible studies at your church. All I can say is that it says in the Bible that nobody but God (not even Jesus or the Holy Spirit) knows the day or the hour that he will send Jesus to take up every Christian into heaven. It could happen tomarrow, the next day, while you are reading this review, or it could not happen for a long time. All I can say now is that we don't have a clue, and that we must be ready for his coming. Nobody who knows about the Tribulation wants to be left behind. If you recently accepted Christ because of these books or your going to church, congratulations!!! You have just recieved God's free gift of Salvation. You are now going to heaven no matter what. But this doesn't mean you should slack off. Take your worship a step further and possibly bring some people to Christ. Go to church, make your own Biblical Website, etc. Whatever it takes for you to better your relationship with Christ, do it!!! Read the bible and pray. I now pray daily ever since I got back from Hume Lake, and it has been nothing but rewarding to me spiritually.
As for you Non-Christians and Atheists, do what I say to do above. Despite you not believing in his son, nor accepting him into your life, God still loves you all very much and doesn't want you to be left behind. Again, go to church, bible study, hume lake, or whatever, and take advantage of God's free gift of salvation and unconditional love (you already have the latter) ASAP. Don't be left behind.
Anyway, I hope you really enjoy reading these books. They are very fun to read. They have lots of suspense (which I like), and will help you to better or even develop your relationship with God. Good luck, and have fun reading these!!!
Summary of Left Behind: A Novel of the Earth's Last Days (Left Behind No. 1)When the trumpet sounds, where will you be? Passengers in an airborne Boeing 747 find out in this riveting novel by renowned Christian speaker Tim LaHaye and master storyteller Jerry Jenkins. Without any warning, passengers mysteriously disappear from their seats. Terror and chaos slowly spread not only through the plane but also worldwide as unusual events continue to unfold. For those who have been left behind, the apocalypse has just begun. This fictional account of life after the Rapture delivers an urgent call to today's readers to prepare their own hearts and minister to others. Piloting his 747, Rayford Steele is musing about his wife Irene's irritating religiosity and contemplating the charms of his "drop-dead gorgeous" flight attendant, Hattie. First Irene was into Amway, then Tupperware, and now it's the Rapture of the Saints--the scary last story in the Bible in which Christians are swept to heaven and unbelievers are left behind to endure the Antichrist's Tribulation. Steele believes he'll put the plane on autopilot and go visit Hattie. But Hattie's in a panic: some of the passengers have disappeared! The Rapture has happened, abruptly driverless cars are crashing all over, and the slick, sinister Romanian Nicolae Carpathia plans to use the UN to establish one world government and religion. Resembling "a young Robert Redford" and silver-tongued in nine languages, Carpathia is named People's "Sexiest Man Alive." (This reviewer, a former People writer, finds this plot twist plausible.) Meanwhile, Steele teams up with Buck Williams, a buck-the-system newshound, to form the Tribulation Force, an underground of left-behind penitents battling the Antichrist. Ex-presidential candidate Pat Robertson briefly outsold Michael Crichton with his apocalypse novel The End of the Age (now available on audiocassette), and the similar The Third Millennium sells well, but the Left Behind series is the absolute champion in the race to make the Book of Revelation into racy thriller reading. --Tim Appelo
