Book Reviews of Leaving Church: A Memoir of FaithBook Review: Fantastic Summary: 5 Stars
I cannot give this book enough praise. As one who spent countless hours a week volunteering at a parish and even became employed by the Church for a time, I too can attest to the disillusionment that comes with the politics involved in helping run a parish. I felt that my spirituality was smothered and had to break away. Barbara Brown Taylor has a natural gift for story telling that when I read I felt as though I was sitting at her kitchen table listening to her speak. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a glimpse into the lives of priests, pastors, and church employees and the challenges they face.
Book Review: Losing and Finding Summary: 5 Stars
Barbara Brown Taylor has created another winner. Her books always cause me to thing, again and again and again. In Leaving Church, she addresses the theological paradox of losing life to find it again. She uses her life experience of leaving the church and her ordained ministry to find God in a place of Sabbath time and communion with the Creator God. Her journey is personal, and yet its themes are universal. The Reader's Guide at the end of the book asks probing questions that help us to personalize Taylor's message and foster growth.
I highly recommend this book.
Book Review: Parish priest's job seen thru through the priest's eyes Summary: 5 Stars
"Leaving Church", by Barbara Brown Taylor,is easy to read and very informative - the first book I've read which takes you through the process of becoming - and being - a parish priest - seen through the priest's eyes. We all know how WE feel about our church - we cannot imagine how the landscape looks to the priest. We learn how she came to her decision to become a minister, how she viewed the process of "becoming", what her disappointments were, what pleased her. This is a book you can "speed-read" - but take time to reflect on her comments and understand who she was in this process.
Book Review: Another great Taylor book Summary: 5 Stars
I must admit in the beginning that I am a Barbara Brown Taylor fan. She is an excellent writer as well as a truly honest human being. To be able to write an auto-biography such as this is admirable.
It seems to me that many of us question the institutional church. Ms. Taylor, who was so deeply engrossed in it as a priest of the Episcopal Church, was faced with the same question. She had the guts to follow
her inner-being and act accordingly, knowing that God's love for her will
never cease. God's kingdom doesn't need the institutional MAN-made church!
Book Review: Recommended Reading Summary: 5 Stars
At first Barbara Brown Taylor is not easy reading for the simple minded like me but about half way through the first book I read, Alter In The World, I caught on to her style of writing and thoroughly enjoyed it. I went back and re-read the first part of the book. Then I got this book, Leaving Church, and found it to be very interesting. It is hard for a woman to be a priest and although she left the church (as a priest), she did not leave God. She is in love with God and His creation and creations. She helped me to see God everywhere, in everything and everybody (almost).
