Book Review: A Solid French Program with Minor Defects

'Learn in Your Car French', after 'Behind the Wheel French' Behind the Wheel - French 1 is one of my favorite car French courses.
Overall, 'Learn in Your Car French' is a very well produced language course that takes the learner through the basics of French pronunciation,grammar, and parroted (not original) sentence formation.
The vocabulary used in 'Learn in Your Car' is reasonably high-frequency, meaning that the French words you learn in the course are common and highly useful.
The voices of the native speakers are agreeable and authentic, although I did note what I believed to be an emphasis on Moroccan or Algerian accents. The course also comes complete with handy and easy-to-use audioscripts of the lessons.
Furthermore, the lessons are arranged in logical sequence, which makes referencing them quite easy.
For all of these wonderful qualities, there exist the inevitable drawbacks. They follow:
1. There is no original sentence formation techniques or practice. This is distressing because the learner is limited to learning and repeating one limited sentence at a time and is never taught to produce a variety of original sentences from a logical base of words, modal verbs, and the like.
2. The structure of the program is quite unnatural and mechanical. There is no 'conversational' base from which to draw. It sort of feels like a language lab type of approach where you listen and repeat but never create.
3. Since there is no instructional interaction between an English speaking instructor and the native French speaker(s), the learner is forced to refer to the manual for further clarification, which is somewhat inconvenient while driving.
For obvious reasons, I prefer the original sentence building techniques and the relaxed interview style approach presented in Behind the Wheel French Behind the Wheel - French 1.
I would highly recommend you use both courses if you are able, as both compliment one another well.
