Summary: 5 Stars

I bought "Leadership Secrets Of Attila The Hun" by Wess Roberts years ago, and I've read it a number of times throughout the years I've owned it. There's a reason it's become a managerial cult classic and that they are still selling copies today. It's a simple book to read that not only entertains, but conveys some very practical advice on leadership. As a martial artist and former paratrooper and military sniper, I obviously enjoy books that relate military, war, martial concepts and such to daily living and leadership. I find that my time in the military and studying martial arts has influenced the way I do things and the topics I teach too. So reading about leadership under Attila The Hun is just plain fun for me, and I guess that is why I have read the book a number of times when I wanted a quick review of some leadership lessons.

Roberts had a unique idea, to use Attilla The Hun, the often characterized ugly, barbaric, tyrant who ruthlessly destroyed everything in his path as he plundered and pillaged numerous cities and villages across the European nations, to illustrate leadership lessons. One has to read the book, not as a history lesson, but as a metaphor for leadership, because there is no authenticity regarding what Attila The Hun said about leadership, but rather lessons that Roberts wanted to share, so he created this unique and entertaining way to do so.

Being an easy to read book, the concepts presented are not theorized to death as in some university text books. Instead, the points are made, and it is up to the reader to continue with the lessons and look for ways to apply them in different situations. This does not mean the lessons are any less important. The concepts presented, such as loyalty, courage, emotional stamina, physical stamina, empathy, timing, competitiveness, accountability, responsibility, tenacity, dependability, stewardship, and more are extremely important for all leaders, regardless of position.

Many chapters of the book contains bullet point lists of important things for a leader to consider. In the entertaining vein of Attila, the lessons are meant for "chieftains." And instead of rewarding your workers, or members of your organization, you learn to reward your "Huns." It's light and easy to read, but also a great primer on basic management and leadership. Many of the bullet points could be expanded upon, and that should be the challenge for each reader. Take the lessons and expand upon them to personally grow as a leader. For a fun quick read, that will remind you of important concepts, check this book out.
