Book Reviews of Laurel Canyon: The Inside Story of Rock-and-Roll's Legendary Neighborhood

Book Review: Laurel Canyon Trip Fantastic
Summary: 5 Stars

One can fault Walker's book for seeming to glamorize the dissipation and pain of this druggy hippy type existence.
"Laurel Canyon" regales us with that life and, in the word "regales," is an element of envy. The author recognizes the life to have been unique, its benefits and joys--and there were some--viewed from a distance with a touch of sorrow. The author may well, like many of us, be sorry to have missed it, to find time having placed him on the outside looking in.
How could we: how could he be sorry? In summation, it was dreadful, wasn't it? Well, it offered a kind of community, a link among talented people rare in our hyper-commercial world where we can watch TV for hours and not have to engage in a serious conversation with anyone--ever, if we don't want to. Did those Laurel Canyon artists have serious conversations? Well, I don't know, but I fantasize they did.
The community life, with all its downers, and, yes, triumphs, is well captured by Walker. Captured like the good reporter he is, with verve and, it must be admitted, with a certain celebratory tone.
Sadness elements aside, it's a good book.

Summary of Laurel Canyon: The Inside Story of Rock-and-Roll's Legendary Neighborhood

In the late sixties and early seventies, an impromptu collection of musicians colonized a eucalyptus-scented canyon deep in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles and melded folk, rock, and savvy American pop into a sound that conquered the world as thoroughly as the songs of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones had before them. Thirty years later, the music made in Laurel Canyon continues to pour from radios, iPods, and concert stages around the world. During the canyon's golden era, the musicians who lived and worked there scored dozens of landmark hits, from "California Dreamin'" to "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" to "It's Too Late," selling tens of millions of records and resetting the thermostat of pop culture.

In Laurel Canyon, veteran journalist Michael Walker tells the inside story of this unprecedented gathering of some of the baby boom's leading musical lights-including Joni Mitchell; Jim Morrison; Crosby, Stills, and Nash; John Mayall; the Mamas and the Papas; Carole King; the Eagles; and Frank Zappa, to name just a few-who turned Los Angeles into the music capital of the world and forever changed the way popular music is recorded, marketed, and consumed.
