Book Review: Top notch read even if you don't usually care for fantasy

Three separate but related short novels make up this prequel to THE MISTS OF AVALON. In each tale, the same three people appear in different incarnations - for reincarnation is one of the Avalon legend's key plot devices, as Bradley re-tells it. The maiden, the priestess, and the king who must give his life for the land and its people lived long ago in lost Atlantis, and they live again in these three different generations between the time of the Romans in Britain and the coming of Arthur.
The first tale picks up the story of Caillean, from THE FOREST HOUSE. In the second we follow Dierna, High Priestess of a different era Avalon; and in the third we meet Viviane, who also appears in the MISTS OF AVALON. Two themes recur: the consequences when humans attempt to carry out the will of the goddess based on their own imperfect interpretations of that will, and the relationship between Britain's believers in the old gods and the Christians who gradually come to dominate their land. Bradley's use of magic in her plotting is consistent, and her characters are easy to care about. In these three stories she does a particularly good job with the male characters, and does it without in any way diminishing the strong yet flawed women who dominate her Avalon series.
A top notch read, even for readers who - like me - generally don't much care for fantasy.
