Book Review: The long, long tale continues with a new narrator

"Kushiel's Scion," the fourth in Jacqueline Carey's artful, subtle, fantasy series that now stretches to seven books, with at least two more planned, switches narrators. We segué from the spy-courtesan-bisexual Phèdre to her adopted son Prince Imriel, third in line for the throne of Terre d'Ange--who is actually the son of Phèdre's frenemy-lover-s&m patron-traitor Melisande Sharizai. We never encounter La Sharizai here, but her unpresence hovers over the entire tale.
Anyhow, the narrative transfer goes smoothly. Ms. Carey is able to convince us that we're now in the hands of an entirely different personality, as Imriel, from sometime in his future, tells us the tale of his adventures in our Italy. We know only what Imriel knows about this alt-history Renaissance society: there is no description of and no prelude to explain precisely what triggered the events that altered this universe from the path taken by our own. (The first of the series, "Kushiel's Dart," contains hints.) There are none of the customary shortcuts in which the narrator seems to step into our universe by writing down things about his own that we need to know but that he would never otherwise have need to explain. Once again the fantasy is subtle, impressionistic, and comes at you in surprising ways.
It's another long, twisting, hot (but strangely elegant) read and it's bound to keep you riveted for all of its 940 pages. There are essentially three parts to the novel, although Ms. Carey does not so divide them. In the first, set in Terre D'Ange (France), we see Imriel grow from adolescence to early adulthood. In the second, set in "Tiberium" (Rome), he gets several different sorts of educations and meets some new friends. In the third, set in "Lucca," a citystate in our Northern Italy, Imriel inadvertently gets caught up in a siege. It's a sequence handled beautifully by the author, especially when one considers how she handicaps herself by insisting that we see only what Imriel does. It is no spoiler, of course to note that Imriel acquits himself nicely during the gritty events. And then there is a stretched-out (80-page) coda--the long, winding road back home to new responsibilities, about which we shall learn more in the fifth volume, "Kushiel's Justice." I intend to embark soon upon that journey.
Notes and asides: Once again John Jude Palencar provides an amazing cover illustration, but it's of Phèdre. Those fantasy lovers who like unicorns, dragons, and cute, elvish personages (or are easily bored) should seek entertainment somewhere else. Adults who do like subtle, sexy fantasies and artful writing should be certain to store the volume far far away from any preteens who " 'round the table go."
