At the time of this "review" (Jan 2010) Kirsten Mini Doll is still available directly from American Girl for $22 plus shipping. (No affiliation, just a penny-pinching AG mini doll collector!)
When ordering any mini doll, remember that they are more of a collector's item, not really a "toy." I'm an adult, & I'm "collecting" them for display. Yes the mini dolls' hair is delicate, & would be almost impossible to fix back if it comes undone..... shoes are tiny, clothing details are tiny.... that's what makes them so cute!! :-) If you want a play-doll for your daughter, then order the $95 18" doll.... or buy an off-brand 18" doll & buy or make the clothes separately. The mini dolls aren't made to stand up to hours of play.
If you're ordering this doll because you want to read the book, buy the real book instead. The mini books are abridged, and the text is TINY..... that's what makes them so cute!!! :-) My daughter & I have the Meet Samantha books - my book is the mini abridged version, & hers is the "real" story. Mine is about 2 chapters' worth of the big book - just enough to give you a taste of the whole story.
Again, I'm collecting the dolls for display. I love miniature things, and I love the historical aspect of the American Girl series but can't shell out $950 (plus tax/shipping!) to buy all the 18" dolls.... these mini dolls are a perfect fit for me!
