Book Review: An explosive conclusion that started from the 1st book

King of Foxes, Book 2 of the Conclave of Shadows, is truly the defining moment of what proves to be an excellent series. As in the first volume, Talon of the Silver Hawk, this book centers around Talwin Hawkins, and the entire script is written from his point of view. But, King of Foxes is a huge step up from its predecessor. Why? Because all the time that was spent on character building during the first book is unnecessary this time around. Thus, we get Talwin Hawkins (a very complex, likeable character) at his most well-rounded, multifaceted, and just plain coolest self.
Though I won't give any spoilers, King of Foxes is truly full of interesting sequences filled with plenty of action. Most of the locations from book 1 are used in King of Foxes, but they all seem slightly different. This is due mainly because we view everything through Talwin, and his character has evolved so much that his perception of details has completely altered.
Talwin's life has come full-circle, and his ultimate quest for retribution, carried from the first book, comes to an epic climax in this volume. All his scheming has paid off, and it is time for him to confront the evil that has plagued him mentally and physically for much of his life. Although the whole book will keep you on edge, the ending is absolutely fantastic! There is a sense of closure, and yet things remain open for the last volume of the trilogy, Exile's Return.
I can't recommend this book enough. In my mind, it was the best of the series, and one of the best fantasy books I've ever read (and I've read A LOT!). Even the humor is great, and not forced like you'll see in other books. I actually laughed aloud during one part, and I can't remember the last time that has happened. Anyway, give this series a go, you won't be disappointed.
