Book Review: Great book, great series

This is the third adventure of Walt Longmire, a 60-ish Sherriff in Wyoming. You'll like Walt and his lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear. There is also a very strong supporting cast including Longmire's police force - not many - and Standing Bear's extended family - still counting. These characters are what drive the stories - not the other way around - and are what keep me coming to the series. I find this author's books somewhat reminiscent of Archer Mayor's Joe Gunther series, with a little James Crumley humor and locale thrown in - along with some Cheyenne mysticism.
In this book Walt and Henry embark on a road trip to Philadelphia. Henry has a Native American photo exhibit he's sponsoring there and the Sheriff takes the opportunity to visit his daughter - who is an Asst. DA in the city of Brotherly Love - and specifically to meet her boyfriend. Upon arrival they are greeted by the devastating news that Walt's daughter is in Intensive Care after a mugging and clinging to life.
Being a police officer Walt can't help but inject himself into the investigation, with his daughter's boyfriend immediately coming under suspicion. Further compounding the situation, a high ranking member of the Philly PD is the father of one of Walt's officers back in Wyoming - who soon joins him in Philadelphia. Sometimes changing locales can back-fire on a series. I didn't find that here - again a credit to the characters and author - and thoroughly enjoyed this one. A very good book and a very good series.
