Book Reviews of Killer Heat

Book Review: Reviewing the book---and the reviews
Summary: 5 Stars

Other readers have commented on Killer Heat, it's plot, subplot etc. I will just say I enjoyed reading it. Linda Fairstein's books are good for several reasons. First, she knows what she's talking about, having been a sex crimes prosector for 25 years. So while her interactions with police, criminals, judges and other lawyers are surely given "literary license", I feel there is a basis of reality behind them. The same is true of the plots and especially the subplots.
I love the NYC tours and little known factoids she gives in each book. I've ended up doing more research on most of her settings and really enjoyed my "travels".
Over the whole series we have gotten to know more and more about Alex's colleagues and friends. I like the fact that she has friends, many fictional crime fighters don't seem to have a lot of friends. She also works closely with, instead of in competition with, the police. I think that this too, is because she has really been there, done that.
One reviewer said it would be nice if both story lines could end up connecting. That happened in "The Kills" The Kills (Fairstein, Linda). If it happened all the time, it would seem very contrived.
Also I must come to Mike Chapman's defense. Sure he has some rough edges and he picks on Alex a lot. But his ribbing is based on a genuine fondness and possibly a little physical attraction. A male cop can hardly say, "Hey I love you, you're my best bud", to a female, and wealthy, Assistant District Attorney. In fact, many readers seem to like him better than any of Alex's lovers. So does at least one of her friends.
One other thing, I don't generally read books that deal with rape. But Linda Fairstein's past and continuing work for rape victims makes me feel that she approaches the subject with dignity, empathy, and from the standpoint of "ok, this happened, now let's get this guy behind bars, and you go out and make a good life for yourself."

Summary of Killer Heat

It’s August in New York, and the only thing that’s hotter than the pavement is Manhattan D.A. Alex Cooper’s professional and personal life. Just as she’s claiming an especially gratifying victory in a rape case, she gets the call: the body of a young woman has been found in an abandoned building. The brutality of the murder is disturbing enough, but when a second body, beaten and disposed of in exactly same manner, is found off the Belt Parkway, the city’s top brass want the killer found fast, before the tabloids can start churning out ghoulish serial killer headlines.

Between dodging the bullets of the gang members who are infuriated by Alex’s most recent courtroom victory and keeping a rendezvous with a charming restaurateur, a serial killer on the loose is the last thing she needs on her plate right now. Then a third victim is found, and it becomes clear to Alex and her team that time is not on their side.

Through Alex’s peerless interrogation skillsand one big breakthe search becomes focused on someone who has a twisted obsession with the military, and things grow increasingly dangerous when the chase leads to a chain of small, abandoned islands around New York harbor.

Once again Linda Fairstein brilliantly orchestrates a page-turning mix of cutting-edge legal issues and forensics, New York City history, and spine-tingling suspense. And at the center of it all is Alex Cooper—stunning, single-minded, accomplished, and not to be trifled with whether she’s in or out of a courtroom.
