Book Review: Almost, but not quite

As a "cozy mystery" fan, I've read the first three installments of Laura Levine's "Jaine Austen" series based on other readers' reviews. And while she has some interesting characters and some good writing, there is just too much extraneous junk to make it truly enjoyable to read. Enough with the parenthetical comments (like the overdone "okay, I didn't say that") and the tiresome adventures with her unlovable cat, Prozac. And the email interchanges with her parents are becoming so ridiculously overdone that I had to skip over those pages. If Laura could clean it up a bit and focus on her storytelling rather than the attempts at glib humor that doesn't quite cut it, these would be marvelous books!! But I have to say that I am stopping at three. "Killer Blonde" killed my appetite for this series.

A gal with a serious Ben & Jerry's habit and credits that include a tome entitled "I Was Henry Kissinger's Sex Slave" can't afford to be too picky about employment. So when a Beverly Hills socialite offers Jaine Austen megabucks to ghostwrite a book of hostess tips, it's time to sharpen the #2s. Pride doesn't feed the cat (and Jaine's furry roommate, Prozac, eats more than the average kitty). But everything short circuits when Jaine finds her employer floating face down in her tub, fried by her own blow dryer.Available only in Mystery 4.
