Book Reviews of Kayakfishing : The RevolutionBook Review: Kayak Fishing.the Revolution Summary: 5 Stars
An outstanding and thorough primer for outfitting and fishing from your kayak.
Book Review: Great book, lots of info. Summary: 4 Stars
This is a great book if you are thinking about getting into kayak fishing of if you have a kayak and are thinking of fishing from it. Although most of the same information can be found online at the various websites and forums dedicated to the sport, this book provides all of the basic information in a nice package. The book is well written and is fun to read. I thought the profiles of the kayak fisherman was a nice touch and really got me thinking about the sport as its own individual sport, rather than fishing in a boat for people who can't afford a ranger. Good book to pass the winter away with.
Book Review: Good Info But Poorly Written & Becoming Dated Summary: 3 Stars
I picked up this book several years ago when I was first getting into yakfishing. It presents lots of helpful info about equipment, techniques, strategies, tips, etc and newcomers will certainly learn a lot of helpful info. Unfortunately the writing is weak and the (lack of)editing is annoying. Daubert arranges the chapters awkwardly and repeats the same info numerous times, making a straight read-through an occasionally tedious activity. For example, chapter 6 is "Customizing Your Kayak" and chapter 7 is "Kayakfishing Accessories." The author talks about many of the EXACT same items in both chapters, occasionally using the EXACT same text. Why not combine the two into one chapter and skip the repetition? My guess is to pad the length of the book...
In any case, there is much to be learned here so wading through the stylistic and organizational weak points is worth it. One other thing to note is that the book is almost 10 years old. There has been much growth in both interest in and products made for this sport, so some of the discussion in the book is getting outdated as Daubert mentions lots of specific products, websites, and the like. This is not a deal-breaker as the book still covers lots of helpful ground, but it will require the reader to do a bit more independent research to supplement the book's resource references. Happy fishing!
Book Review: Where's the editor when you really need him? Summary: 3 Stars
The information in this book is good. There is no question that subtitling it "The Revolution" is accurate and likewise there is no question that anyone wanting to begin fishing from a kayak ought to read and refer back regularly to this book. However . . . and this is a BIG however . . . from a textual standpoint it's a mess. Daubert's wordprocessing program must not have a spellcheck in it because there are a number of repeated howlers. The same information is presented in more than one chapter without referring back to make sure the reader knows that the repetition is deliberate. This is the sort of book that gives self-publishing a bad name because someone really, really needed to look it over before it went to print.
Still, if you want to start kayak fishing get it and read it several times . . . probably with your teeth clenched.
Book Review: Kayakfishing: The Revolution Summary: 2 Stars
There is some basic useful imformation in this book, but it is one of the most poorly written books I have ever read. Often he will circle around with two or three, even four sentences, saying essentially the same content. You would have to believe that no editor was employed in writing this book, because the pros are so bad. If you can wade through the flawed writing that seems like its from gradeschool level, then I guess you can benefit from some of the information. I have no doubt that he is an accomplished kayak fisherman, and I appreciate how he gave credit to others who are also promoting this sport. Just wish he could write as well as he can fish!
