Book Review: Kaleidoscope - The Perfect Name

When one hears the term "kaleidoscope", images of looking at all sorts of beautiful designs - with the next more brilliant than the one before - comes to mind. And that's exactly what Suz Simanaitis does with this piece of gorgeous work.
For someone looking for a "how to" book, there are several projects to either incorporate into your work or to make - but this may not be the book for you. There are many great "how to" books on the market, and if that is what you are looking for, you may want to move on. However, on the other hand...if you are looking for a book to encourage you to just create, provide you with different perspectives on why some people feel the need to make art (& the motivation behind why several artists made certain pieces), give you page after page of incredible eye candy, and breakdown your boundaries...this is THE book.
This is a book to be READ - cover to cover. I flipped through it before deciding to start at the beginning...and only after reading it page by page did I realize I'd missed several yummy morsels of information. This book covers tons of information in its 144 pages - but is geared toward the "serious" artist. Although I can see why someone looking for craft patterns and art "how to"s may be disappointed, Kaleidoscope does present limitless ideas - just not in the "step 1", "step 2" configuration of most instructional manuals. This book is more for those who "live" art and are looking to expand their horizons with new ways to think and different glimpses into the work of others.
The only caveat? As other reviewers have said, the print is difficult to read in some places...but for a book to be so full of inspiration and thought-changing ideas, I can deal with a couple of places where I have to strain to make out all the characters. This is a delicious book - and has prompted me to get more involved in the zine scene - one which I originally thought wasn't for me.
