Book Review: A bit redundant but an astonishing biography

Axling says at the outset that this work isn't really a biography since, at the time that it was written in the early 1930s, Kagawa clearly had many years to continue his altruistic activities. It's a shame that we, in the west, never hear about Kagawa, even though he eventually visited the United States, just prior to WWII. Kagawa was sort of the Gandhi of Japan, speaking out on humans rights issues and standing firm behind Japanese urban laborers and peasants to attempt to gain them some level of human rights. He was nearly killed on many occasions, sometimes by the direlects he was trying to save. He fell afoul of Communist labor advocates and most others since the basis for his crusade was Christianity. He was critical of Gandhi for limiting his efforts to India -- Kagawa wanted peace and harmony for the entire planet and never doubted that he could help bring it about within his own lifetime.
The author, does belabor certain points but, all in all, it's a great read and an important contribution to world history.
