Book Reviews of Julie of the Wolves (rack)

Book Review: A great read for adults as well as for its target audience
Summary: 5 Stars

Thirteen-year-old Julie Edwards Miyax Kapugen finds herself torn between two cultures, and that is why she has two names. "Julie" is how her pen pal in San Francisco knows her, and "Julie" is a modern teenager who lives in a town and goes to school in English. "Miyax" is the daughter of Eskimo hunter Kapugen, who has spent much of her childhood with her widowed father living a traditional Inuit life. Marrying at thirteen is part of that life. Miyax takes it in stride as long as her husband's family treats her simply as an additional child. But when her husband tries to force her to consummate the marriage, Miyax runs away. She thinks she can reach San Francisco, and accept pen pal Amy's invitation to live there. Instead, unable to find her way on the tundra during Alaska's perpetual summer daylight (for Miyax's ability to navigate depends on the stars), she becomes lost and soon begins to starve. Her one hope to survive long enough for the stars to come out again lies in a wolf pack. Can she learn how to fit herself into that pack, which will then take care of her?

I managed to read this first book in the trilogy last, and for that reason I didn't enjoy it as fully as I might have. I cannot give it less than a stellar rating, though, because it is a fantastic piece of work. Well written, moving, and filled with lessons that are presented in the best way possible - in the context of an engaging story - I can see why it won the Newbery. Which makes it exactly the sort of "YA" book that adults, too, can enjoy!

Summary of Julie of the Wolves (rack)

To her small Eskimo village, she is known as Miyax; to her friend in San Francisco, she is Julie. When her life in the village becomes dangerous, Miyax runs away, only to find herself lost in the Alaskan wilderness.

Without food and time running out, Miyax tries to survive by copying the ways of a pack of wolves. Accepted by their leader and befriended by a feisty pup named Kapu, she soon grows to love her new wolf family. Life in the wilderness is a struggle, but when she finds her way back to civilization, Miyax is torn between her old a new lives. Is she Miyax of the Eskimos -- or Julie of the wolves?

Miyax, like many adolescents, is torn. But unlike most, her choices may determine whether she lives or dies. At 13, an orphan, and unhappily married, Miyax runs away from her husband's parents' home, hoping to reach San Francisco and her pen pal. But she becomes lost in the vast Alaskan tundra, with no food, no shelter, and no idea which is the way to safety. Now, more than ever, she must look hard at who she really is. Is she Miyax, Eskimo girl of the old ways? Or is she Julie (her "gussak"-white people-name), the modernized teenager who must mock the traditional customs? And when a pack of wolves begins to accept her into their community, Miyax must learn to think like a wolf as well. If she trusts her Eskimo instincts, will she stand a chance of surviving? John Schoenherr's line drawings suggest rather than tell about the compelling experiences of a girl searching for answers in a bleak landscape that at first glance would seem to hold nothing. Fans of Jean Craighead George's stunning, Newberry Medal-winning coming-of-age story won't want to miss Julie (1994) and Julie's Wolf Pack (1998). (Ages 10 and older) --Emilie Coulter
