Book Review: A very enjoyable book

"Journey of the Mask" is written in the first person, from Erik's point of view, as a memoir that he leaves behind for Christine to find after his death. It details the events that occurred in Paris at the Opera House and beyond. Erik, in his desperate attempt to win Christine for himself, abducts her and takes her across the Atlantic where he plans to make a new life with her in New Orleans. Christine, at first, is very angry with Erik, and demands to be sent back to Paris to Raoul. Erik finally agrees to send her back when they reach America, but when the ship docks in Virginia, Christine announces her intention to remain with him. Erik and Christine marry and make a home in New Orleans, but Erik continues to struggle with demons and nightmares from his past. As Erik tells his story, details of life in the French Quarter of New Orleans are interwoven into the narrative.
Quite frankly, I don't understand some of the negative comments that I've seen in other reviews of this book. I find it perfectly reasonable that Erik would relocate in New Orleans in order to escape Raoul, (who isn't exactly a nice guy himself), Paris, and his past. I also don't find it out of character that he would be fascinated by Voodoo, (which also plays a part in the history of New Orleans), use alcohol to dull his pain, or succumb to occasional acts of violence. Another reader complained that Erik talked about his awful past but never gave the details. I really didn't feel the need to read a blow-by-blow account of Erik's past transgressions. I already know that Erik was a very complex, troubled man who was perfectly capable of brutality. If this was a memoir that he wrote for Christine to find, it makes sense that he would want to spare her the gory details of what had been done to him and what he had done to others. The Erik of this story is very much in keeping with Leroux's work, from the nature of his facial deformity to his volatile, but sensitive, personality. Underneath it all, he longed to be loved like anyone else.
