Book Reviews of JournalsBook Review: Mixed emotions Summary: 5 Stars
I had a hard time buying this book. Kurt's personal thoughts never meant for public consumption released by his ex-wife after his tragic death. I justified buying it as I wanted to try to learn who Kurt really was? What he actually thought and felt on a number of subjects. How he reacted in particular circumstances. I wanted to try and get a look into his persona without all the spins, etc. I can't say that the book answered all these questions but they did reveal aspects of Cobain which don't seem to be in the forefront. It seems so much of what's been written about him and Nirvana are in conflict. No one seems to be able to agree on much about them for certain other than the fact that they were an independant, original punk-metal-pop band brought all soon to an end by the death of Cobain. This book does offer good insight directly from Kurt however it seems even he couldn't resist contradictory statements and actions. I think to a large degree he enjoyed such confusion feeling that to much attention was spent on things other than their music! I'd recommend the book to anyone who is fascinated by the band. It won't answer all the questions and you will feel like your violating his personal space but it can provide some sense of understanding a few aspects of the man.
Book Review: Fascinated Summary: 5 Stars
I too hesitated when I saw this book in the bookstore. Was reading it an invasion of privacy? In my childhood I was taught that reading the journal of another without permission was a despicable act. However, this man fascinated me, and I was deeply moved by the opportunity to learn about the human being that he was rather than the icon he became. I suppose I justified reading it by the fact that I have kept detailed and very personal journals for 26 years and while I am a very private person, I have kept these journals with the knowledge that one day, in all likelihood, they would be read by someone else. As one who journals I do it knowing that if I put my thoughts outside of myself in this way, I accept the possibility (fact) that they will be read at some time or another. I would never claim to know what another person (Kurt Cobain in this case) would think about this, but for me, this knowledge is a part of keeping a journal. While it will surely not be on the scale of Kurt Cobain, I will "live on" after I'm gone. A message in a bottle of sorts. Kurt Cobain had an intensely fascinating mind and as an artist and writer, I was glad to have had the opportunity to get a small glimpse of the creative process that produced the music that amazed me so.
Book Review: A look into the soul of KURDT! Summary: 5 Stars
If you're a kurt cobain/nirvana fan i HIGHLY recommend this book. If you arent, i still recommend it - and after reading it you will fall in love with kurt. The book is a collection of kurts diaries that courtney love (his wife) sold after she went bankrupt. it provides an insight into the soul and personality of kurt cobain and is a propeller on the road to understanding the being that kurt was. also, since kurt formulated the lyrics of many of the songs in his diary, the book contains the original lyrics of many of nirvanas hits. also included are rough drafts of letters kurt wrote to record companies in the early years of the band, former band members, and other friends and family. the book also contains alot of sketches by kurt and other free writing that kurt did either when he was drunk/stoned or just reflecting on his life.
the book is in kurts own handwriting and its literally like reading the original diary itself.
and if you arent a fan, ask yourself: havent you ever wanted to read the diary of a celebrity - and through their own words - understand the life they live. well, its your lucky day.
this is just IT.
Book Review: Great Book Summary: 5 Stars
As a big fan of Nirvana, I was curious about this book, but I thought it was a invasion of privacy. When I got this book yesterday, I couldn't put it down and I finished it this morning. It was that interesting, this man was a true genius. The way Kurt put words together were just amazing. He was like a prodigy and he didn't even know it. Well, maybe that's a little extreme, but it's truly what I believe. Not only was he smart, but he was so observant in the smallest things, like him closing his eyes really tight and then opening them and seeing all these dots that he believed were blood cells. Sure, at times he would just rant, but he was a regular person like everyone else. He was human, he wasn't perfect just because he was a rockstar. He actually cared about a lot of things. Now, I don't want to give too much away, but I found this book authentic and real. No fake angst. If you are a fan of Nirvana or Kurt Cobain, read a little at a book store or something and if you don't like it, that's ok. See what's right for you.
Book Review: Great Summary: 5 Stars
So far what i have read is great. I can't put it down. It took me awile to think if i wanted to read this or not. I know if it was up to kurt it would never be on bookshelfs. The its the last thing he would want with his ideas, expressions, and words. I know alot of people out there are so anti this book they feel if you read it your not a true fan. But what really is worse? Being a huge fan of his work and wanting to know more about him and hear what he had to say and what went on in his head? Or being the ex-wife that sold the wrights and most likly put half of the money profits up her noise. I think if he really truly did not want only at all to read it. He would have distoryed it, or giving it to better hands and told them never to let it go. I respect the man so much and he was truly one of the best rock icons to ever live. This book helps you understand him more and learn about the days before bleach and up to the end.... I love how it has the orginal copys of the lyrics and even notes and cartoons he drew....
