Book Review: A Great Workbook- with no instructions

I sympathize with other reviewers expressing frustration - I bought this book many years ago and experienced the same problems. This is really a workbook on using chords in the Joe Pass style, not a chord encyclopedia; there are no detailed instructions contained in the text. I hope this review will provide some help.
The book assumes you can read music, understand chord progressions in the keys of C major and C minor (i.e. know that the V chord of C major is G7, the ii chord of C Minor is Dm7b5 etc.) and understand chord substitution.
There are 3 sections in the book - "Chord Forms", "Chord Passages" and "Standard Pattern Chord Substitutions".
1. Chord Forms.
Only chord grids, together with the notes on a treble clef, are provided. The notes used in the shape are under each string in the grid but the name of the chord is missing. The reader is expected to name (and label) the chords and use them in the last section of the book - without doing this, the book is useless.
The chords are NOT all C chords - they are in the KEY of C - only the Major and Minor chords are C chords.
The Seventh chords are G7 type chords, some with alterations and extensions. The Minor Seventh Flat Five chords are all Dm7b5 or closely related chords. The Augmented chords are G+ type chords (treated as an altered dominant in the key of C).
Some of the chords are "flat five" substitutes.
2. Chord Passages.
These are some sample progressions using the chords - you need to read the notes on page 14 very carefully, as they describe the function of some of the chords.
3. Standard Pattern Chord Progressions.
This is a list of substitutions and common progressions in the key of C. It starts with two bars of Dm7, and lists a dozen examples of using other chords in place of the Dm7. There are six other basic progressions treated in the same way, including the Blues. The idea is to use the chord shapes from the Chord Forms section in these progressions.
These are the chords that Joe Pass used - there are no extreme stretches and the grips are comfortable and very usable. The chords are accurately transcribed, and I have not discovered any mistakes.
If you understand the above comments, can read standard notation and are prepared to put in the work, then this is a great book.
