Book Review: Great New Paranormal From Meg Cabot

You would think being a preacher's daughter and a pretty decent human being would perhaps bring you a little good luck occasionally. Not so for Jean (Jinx) Honeychurch. Misfortune seems to follow her everywhere, which takes us to the start of this wonderful story. Jean has been sent to live with her Aunt and Uncle in New York after running into some mysterious problem with a boy back at home. Once in New York, Jean discovers that not only has her cousin Tory (who she used to be close with) turned into a complete snob, but that she also fancies herself a witch, literally. The story unfolds with an ever growing battle between Jean and Tory, in which Jean will only win if she accepts that she herself has powers. I have to agree with one of the other reviewers who said that Meg Cabot is at her strongest when she's writing paranormal stories. The characters in this book were marvelous, and you even felt sorry at times for the witchy Tory. Jean is a marvelous mix of insecurity and determination. Her love interest Zach is fantastic in his handling of both Tory and Jean. The finale is priceless with Tory getting the perfect comeuppance. I would love to see another book about the further adventures of Jean. However, I've heard that the author is planning the sequel to be in manga format like she did with the follow-up to Avalon High. Oh well. I loved these characters enough that I'd read about them in any format.
Summary of Jinx
The only thing Jean Honeychurch hates more than her boring name (not Jean Marie, or Jeanette, just . . . Jean) is her all-too-appropriate nickname, Jinx. Misfor-tune seems to follow her everywhere she goes?which is why she's thrilled to be moving in with her aunt and uncle in New York City. Maybe when she's halfway across the country, Jinx can finally outrun her bad luck. Or at least escape the havoc she's caused back in her small hometown.
But trouble has definitely followed Jinx to New York. And it's causing big problems for her cousin Tory, who is not happy to have the family black sheep around. Beautiful, glamorous Tory is hiding a dangerous secret?one that she's sure Jinx is going to reveal.
Jinx is beginning to realize it isn't just bad luck she's been running from. It's something far more sinister . . . and the curse Jinx has lived under since the day she was born might just be the only thing that can save her life.
