Book Reviews of Jesus of NazarethBook Review: Corrective Summary: 5 Stars
I will have to reread this book several times. It is a wonderful antidote to the stuff we studied after the Vatican Council. Though much of the stuff was exciting, I sensed that some "theologians" were convinced that the scriptures meant anything other than what they actually said. Christianity taught witout content is a major problem in the Church.
The Holy Father is a gifted theologian and teacher, who can explain church teachings in a convincing way. I wish I had him as a teacher but my latin was not that good. His books provide the good theology needed for a sound spiritual life.
This book is a wonderful gift for educated Catholics who have neglected their education in theology and the contemplative tradition of the Church. The book is corrective and refreshing in that it written by a man who understands the scriptures, the Greek philosophers, and the Fathers of the Church.
The pressure to make the Catholic Church like all the others is illustrated in the innane comments in the media-parrallels some of the liberal theologians.
Book Review: Wonderful Academic Work Summary: 5 Stars
In this book, Pope Benedict XVI uses both the New and Old Testaments to confirm the Divinity of Christ, and gives us direction on how to increase our faith and expand our hope. He also confirms the catholicity of the Catholic Church and instills that our goal is to find salvation through Jesus. While he's speaking directly to academe, this book was also written for all people. Along with the Bible he reinforces his points with tradition and other theological sources.
We are able to benefit from His Holiness masterfully shows that Jesus revealed that he himself was God. You understand Jesus is Lord when you have finished this book, or have it reinforced if you already know the truth. This is a great textbook and though I do recommend that everyone read this book, be aware that it does seem to expect the reader to have a background in the Bible and to be familiar with the story of Jesus. This is the kind of book you would expect from the Church's leading theologian. I do recommend you get your own copy so you can read and re-read this.
Book Review: Masterful, as expected Summary: 5 Stars
A masterful study that counters the modernist interpretations of the historical-Jesus as well as the liberal theology of social or political activism. The master teacher turned holy father leads us on a journey to discover that the real Jesus can only be understood if we presuppose the unity of scripture. Attempts to reduce Jesus to an apocalyptic prophet, political revolutionary, social activist, and all other one-dimensional understandings fail. Only when we accept that he is who he claimed to be do we begin to understand his life and the rest of his message. By expositional teaching from the gospels, Pope Benedict XVI gives us a new appreciation and love for our Lord. Of course Pope Benedict XVI was previously known as a gifted theologian and it shows in the depth of analysis and drawing in of scripture from both old and new testaments as a coherent whole. This is expositional scripture study at its best. A work that does not disappoint our great expectations from the holy father. And this is just the first volume in an ongoing work.
Book Review: A pleasant change Summary: 5 Stars
Although I learn much at my parish thru sermons and the occasional "special topics" seminars, I purchased this book to learn more about Jesus and his few years of ministry and public life. I wanted to have something to answer to the critics, to counter some of the nonsense about Jesus.
Before I read "Jesus of Nazareth", I wondered how Jesus fulfilled so many promises in such a short time while on earth. It doesn't say in the book if He had a list - but I certainly would have needed one. It turns out He was fulfilling promises made long-ago by his Father that were recorded in a few good books. You might have heard of them: Genesis, Exodus, etc. After his short public life, Jesus' words and actions laid the groundwork for the next books that would follow.
This book won't teach you how to debate a critic of religion. But you might learn enough to be able to smile back at them with a quiet satifaction that only knowledge and truth can provide.
So, go ahead and smile.
Book Review: Wonderful!!!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Jesus of Nazareth (Hardcover) by Pope Benedict XVI is a wonderful book, I must say I have not felt such a spiritual impact, from a book (besides the Bible), as this one, since I read R. A Torry's book called, the person and work of the Holy spirit. I find myself, reading a paragraph and then rereading it again and again, to get the full impact. The Pope's witting is very deep, very scholarly but also attainable to us lay people, and very much filled with the Love of Christ. Pope Benedict presents to us the person of Jesus, from His Baptism to the transfiguration, in both a Spiritual and a Historical context. The Pope discusses Jesus Baptism, The Sermon on the Mount, the LORD'S Prayer, Jesus as Symbol (The Lamb Of God, The Good Shepard, The Sheep Gate, Jacobs Latter, Water, Wine, Bread etc.,) The Pope Shows us who Jesus is, the Great I Am (YHWH) God in a Human Body. He shows us the Who, What, Ware, and then Why it matters for all of us. I would highly recommend Jesus of Nazareth for everyone.
