JESUS FOR THE NON-RELIGIOUS

There are few people who are luke warm on the author--you either like him or you don't! He is a retired Episcopal bishop, who claims to be in "exile" for his radical views. In his retirement he is a noted author of twenty plus books and highly sought-after speaker.

This book, as the title states, is for those who have had it with Christianity. They are unwilling to sacrifice their intellect to accept the literal truth of many of the stories and teachings of the Bible. For them, Spong is the rescuer!

Bishop Spong explodes story after biblical story as they as regard unbelievable, literal details. For example there was no star over Bethlehem; there were no wise men and if there had been, there would not have necessarily been three, they would not necessarily have been on camels or brought the traditional gifts, nor does he believe that Jesus was born in Bethlehem--more likely in Nazareth. And that's just for starters! He even questions the parentage of Jesus and particularly that Mary was a virgin!

If you can get through that one you may be ready for questioning the historicity of the twelve disciples and the nature miracles. He questions Jesus' raising the dead in various stories.

But before you discount Spong all together, stay with him to the end of the book where he puts it all together with a view of who the historical Jesus really was and who the God is that he came to represent. If at the end of the book you can't accept one hundred percent of Spong, you'll come away with a lot to think about!
