Book Review: Having met & spoken with Bencley, Jaws stands as a crowning achievment

Jaws was first published in 1974 and it quickly climbed the NY Times Best Seller List to acclaimed reviews and terrified readers. Personaly, I was a mere child of 7 & 8 when the paper back novel lined book store shelves. My parents had it and the image of the shark swimming up under Chrissie intrigued me (This cover was also the 1-sheet poster for the film, painted by Roger Kastel, an acclaimed artist who also did posters for such films as "The Empire Strikes Back"). I swiped the book, skipped everything that had to do with the affair and read everything that centered around the shark. I was captivated and terrified at how Bencley had inticately woven the words of the sharks presence and its subsequent attacks.
It wasn't until I was a few years older that I actually took the time to read EVERY word of the book and genuinely appreciated the subplots of a Mayor involved in mafioso money deals and dirty real estate, a philandering police chief's wife, a more smart mouthed Hooper, a more sarcastic Quint and G & G (Grass and Gespatcho).
I've enjoyed many of Bencley's novels, but it was clearly Jaws that was his best work, which came to inspire the first summer blockbuster film that launched a - then-nobody - Steven Spielberg's career.
The novel was the first adult themed novel I ever read and it embarked a life of enjoying all types of reading. However, it was the film that made me a filmmaker. Yet, both stand as their own incredible stories and Peter Bencley is, after all, the father of "Jaws", and Spielberg the son of "Jaws", per say.
In June of 2005 I was part of the crew of a documentary entitled "The Shark Is Still Working" which is, in itself, a unique and different tale on the tail with behind the scenes footage that no-one has ever seen. This was partially shot during Jawsfest05 on Marthas Vineyard where the film was made and it was here that a small group of us had the rare priveledge of sitting down and interviewing this very kind and gracious man. I believe it was the LAST interview he ever gave before his death and it was such an honor to spend some personal time with him and lis lovely wife Wendy and just talk about Jaws and his writing the novel. I genuinely believe that for him to stand before a standing ovation of 3,000 people at the films beach front screening was a full circle kind of satisfaction for him. It was a very defining moment to see him proudly beaming and one that I am proud to have shared with him in a personal and private way during the interviewfor the documentary (To be released soon).
