Book Reviews of JavaScript: The Definitive GuideBook Review: Good introductory and reference book Summary: 5 Stars
This book could easily serve as an introductory text to JavaScript. It offers enough depth for beginning JavaScript. Unfortunately, it does not delve enough into things like closure, which I believe is a very important language features. Furthermore, after the first or second reading, this book can handily serve as a reference book since part 3 and 4 of this book is reference to the classes, methods, and functions that are available in most JavaScript implementation.
Book Review: So good I've worn it out. Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this book for a few years now and I think I've about worn it out and need to get another copy. I took it to work and my whole department borrows it on a weekly basis. It's very handy and covers almost everything you would need to know (from a professional level) about javascript. It's the "definitive guide" though, so you probably don't want to read this one cover to cover unless you're a robot. For anyone looking for a technical reference this is great.
Book Review: Always Within Reach Summary: 5 Stars
This is THE reference book for JavaScript. I go to it when I have a question about how something works or how to do something. It has a detailed index, which is always important to me because I rarely want to read a chapter when I'm looking for something specific.
I've owned two previous editions, and when I replaced them, they were each well-worn and dog-eared.
I recommend this to anyone who finds themselves in the world of JavaScript.
Book Review: And it's only $32? Wow. Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this book because I wanted to learn JavaScript, and it is doing just that!!! There is so much stuff packed into this book that it is amazing, and I can't believe I only payed $32 for it! It covers everything you need to know. It goes into more detail about JavaScript than any book on any other language I have seen. And all the pages are not little flashy examples. It is a real reference for those who are serious about learning JS.
Book Review: Really good book Summary: 5 Stars
This book is highly readable and helped me understand client side scripting. As a long time server side scripter (php mostly), client side scripting was largely foreign to me, until after reading this book. Its full of useful examples and is clear on the difference between the true "standards" way of doing things, and what is required to make things work in non-standards compliant browsers. Oh, and Yes, the latest edition covers AJAX.
