Book Review: One of the great children's books

...

James and the Giant Peach is the first from this. Jill's been trying to get me to read this children's book for years, *knowing* that I would appreciate it. She was right, of course. I loved it. It's exactly the type of children's book that I look for: not sickly sweet with a sledgehammer moral, but sly and wicked and funny and irreverant, with an underlying ethical framework that I can agree with. Characters in books like these can be exaggerated (as Dahl did with wonderful effect in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), but they contain a kernel of what we see in our everyday world--things like greed, egoism, abuse, unhappiness, etc.

Book Review: The Best Book Ever
Summary: 5 Stars

James and the Giant Peach is a cool and sad book. The main famous characters are James, a 7 year old boy who is lonely, and his two aunts; Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker, who are very mean aunts. In the book there are bug friends like Miss. Spider, and many more. In London near the ocean, a rhinosaurus escaped from the zoo and killed James' parents. In the story there is a giant peach too! James and the Giant Peach is a great book because you have to be creative. If you read this book you would have to use your imagination. In the book there is some sad parts too. I tell you that you should read this book because it is a fantastic book!

Book Review: Imaginative Classic for Children
Summary: 5 Stars

Roald Dahl has always been one of my favorite children's book authors. His books often are slightly dark, but triumphant in a way that remind you of Lemony Snicket and Harry Potter. In this tale, however, James is an orphan living with horrible aunts. He escapes his horrible existence when he climbs aboard a peach that keeps growing and growing. Delightful in that he gets to live in a peach, and everything in the peach including a worm gets to become James' size as well. Also recommended are Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events and the Emily Cobbs Collection.
