Book Reviews of JOY OF COOKINGBook Review: Bachelor home companion Summary: 5 Stars
You'd be surprised how good this book is. Know any single men who live on defrosted Stouffer's macaroni and cheese? Buy them this book.
I've owned various editions of The Joy of Cooking, and this current one is excellent. Most useful features: the index. Least useful feature: the menus (a little tired).
But the authors have helpfully identified and differentiated standard recipes from superior ones, using largely the same ingredients. Here, the kitchen and taste tested "Cockaigne" recipes are the best.
This is an excellent reference for beginners and experts alike. I recommend the hardback edition for longer wear.
Book Review: This da book! Summary: 5 Stars
This is my favorite cookbook and if I could have only one cookbook this would be the one! The recipes are delicious and the instructions are easy to follow. If you want to "wow" your friends, make the lebkuchen or the strawberry pie! This is the cookbook to have if you need to prepare game or if you want to can your millions of tomatoes or make jam or jelly--or if you would like to think you could do it if you had to. I hope that this edition of "Joy of Cooking" stays in print because it is such a good book. I have the newer edition, and I consult it, but this one is my favorite.
Book Review: Joy of cooking Summary: 5 Stars
I was delighted to find this - had been searching in the UK for some time. I first bought the Joy of Cooking in 1977 while living in Ethiopia, but sadly after 30 years that edition was literally falling to pieces, though still in constant use. I have looked at more recent editions and been disappointed, so I was delighted to find this facsimile edition at a very reasonable price. I love the chatty style, which makes it all feel like cookery advice from a friend, and the background information about foods and cooking methods is invaluable. If I could only keep one cook book, this would be it!
Book Review: The Most Useful Cookbook I Own Summary: 5 Stars
The Joy of Cooking both instructs the reader about food (without being pretentious) and presents so many recipes that any cook can find something new to try. The depth and breadth of cuisines and dishes covered is unmatched by any other single cookbook I've found. From boiling a hard boiled egg to making roast suckling pig, this cookbook has it covered.
Of the two or three dozen cookbooks I own, The Joy of Cooking cookbook is the one upon which I rely, trust, and use the most. This cookbook is essential to the household kitchen.
Book Review: Better than the new edition Summary: 5 Stars
I bought a new edition of Joy of Cooking before I retired to South Carolina and threw away my old copy which was splattered and well-used. What a mistake! Some of my favorite recipes were not in the new edition, and when I complained my husband suggested that I go online to see if I could purchase the old edition. My favorite recipes are back in my kitchen and I'm very happy to have this old friend with me once more. Anytime I need advice on cooking, this book never lets me down.
