Book Reviews of It's Okay to Be DifferentBook Review: It's Okay to LOVE this book!! Summary: 5 Stars
I (at the time a Todd Parr virgin) found this book at Goodwill for three bucks. It looked good for my special needs classrooms and new foster daughter...WOW! One student [extremely self-conscious, highly dyslexic, abandoned by his mum, lived in his fantasy game world the first 6 mo. I knew him] had a life-changing response to it. This second grader had just begun to see himself as capable of reading (thank you, Reading Mastery) but resisted writing in any form. He fell off his chair 20 min. after I'd read the book with them. Another boy laughed. I said, "It's okay to fall off your chair!" My little hero decided that should have been in the book. He found paper, markers, and Todd's book. The first non-violent picture I'd seen him draw and the proud words "It's Okay to fall off your chair" hung on my wall for the rest of the year. I shared this story with other teachers. A librarian borrowed my copy and read it to each classroom. She, one of the most equity-minded and brilliant teachers I know, raved about the deep discussions they'd had about differences. I recommend this book unequivocally. I used Amazon to procure more Todd books, and will continue to do so. Don't let the simplistic pictures fool you. This book is deep, intuitive, and one of the most excellent tools available. Every day we teachers challenge children and adults to examine and shift their thinking. Todd Parr makes this easier, hilarious, and gentle. Buy this book and read it to children again and again and again.
Book Review: OMG ... A Must For Your Child's Library Summary: 5 Stars
Kudos to Todd Parr! What a clever, brilliant and fantastic book. One of my two-year-old daughter's first phrases was "That's Okay."
* It's okay to help a squirrel collect nuts.
* It's okay to eat macaroni and cheese in the bathtub.
* It's okay to have no hair.
Very touching and sensitive. I like to explain the pictures to her to show her why the blind girl needs a dog, or the boy in a wheelchair is just like her uncle. She's a little young for all the topics, but it's never to early to start seeing all the variations in the world.
Book Review: Alternative family book Summary: 5 Stars
Colourful, high contrast children's book applicable to a large reader base. Depending on listener age, varying levels of message can be drawn out with relevant questions/discussion.
Our kids do not have a 'traditional' family unit, this book has helped them understand that there are all types of ways to be different. It's about diversity. Our youngest children love this book. They have taken it for show and tell for the 'me, my family and I' unit at school.
Book Review: an important book for kids Summary: 5 Stars
My youngest child got this as a gift and it was a huge blessing. This is such a beautiful book that deals with the very important issue of finding your place in the world. This is a good message for both children and adults.
This is a very compassionate book with great artwork and a great message, It shows that the world is an accepting place, if you allow yourself to be yourself.
Book Review: "It's Okay to Be Different" Summary: 5 Stars
We bought three dozen copies of this book and we LOVE IT! We are using the book as a tool to create awareness around our son's learning disability. We gave them to each child in his Kindergarten class to help explain our child's unique difference. The book is beautifully illustrated and contains simple graphics and hilarious silliness appropriate to our[...]age group. WE LOVE TODD PARR!
