Book Reviews of It's Not the Stork!: A Book About Girls, Boys, Babies, Bodies, Families and Friends (The Family Library)

Book Review: just what I was looking for
Summary: 5 Stars

Sometime last year, my now-six year old daughter came right out and asked how babies were made. I told her that babies came from an egg from a mommy and a sperm from a daddy, and she seemed satisfied with that answer. But I knew that it wasn't going to be long before she wanted more information, she being the girl who loves looking at pictures of the heart's chambers and the digestive system and different kinds of cells. I realized, too, that my eight year old son was at or past the age where we should have had some kind of introductory sex ed talk with him. After poking around on Amazon I found this book.

It's a cute book. There are a ton of pictures, with x-ray type drawings of the internal sex organs of a boy and a girl [Daughter: "Those ovaries look like tomatoes!" Which they kind of do.], and drawings that label the external body parts of both sexes, from ears to anus. There's a part about how bodies change, showing babies growing to be old people, and the illustrations are really fun to look at. Love the description of the sperm meeting the lipsticked, eyelashed egg, shown through a two-page cartoon [Sperm One: "We've been swimming for TWO HOURS!" Sperm two: "Look, he got in!"], followed by chapters on how a baby grows inside its mother, how babies are born, how babies grow in their first few months, families, and ok/not ok touches.

I highly recommend the book; the cover suggests it's for four and up but I'd say a mature five or maybe six. It's definitely a picture book but it's packed with a lot of material that I think would go over a younger child's head. They'd probably enjoy the pictures but I don't know how much they would get out of the text. It's not a conservative book, it does talk about families with two mommies and two daddies, it describes how some babies are born at home, and there are also a few paragraphs about in-vitro and adoption, but that is one of the reasons I like this book so much. And yay for mentioning doulas!

Summary of It's Not the Stork!: A Book About Girls, Boys, Babies, Bodies, Families and Friends (The Family Library)

From the expert team behind IT'S PERFECTLY NORMAL and IT'S SO AMAZING! comes a book for younger children about their bodies ? a resource that parents, teachers, librarians, health care providers, and clergy can use with ease and confidence.

Young children are curious about almost everything, especially their bodies. And young children are not afraid to ask questions. What makes me a girl? What makes me a boy? Why are some parts of girls' and boys' bodies the same and why are some parts different? How was I made? Where do babies come from? Is it true that a stork brings babies to mommies and daddies?

IT'S NOT THE STORK! helps answer these endless and perfectly normal questions that preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary school children ask about how they began. Through lively, comfortable language and sensitive, engaging artwork, Robie H. Harris and Michael Emberley address readers in a reassuring way, mindful of a child's healthy desire for straightforward information. Two irresistible cartoon characters, a curious bird and a squeamish bee, provide comic relief and give voice to the full range of emotions and reactions children may experience while learning about their amazing bodies. Vetted and approved by science, health, and child development experts, the information is up-to-date, age-appropriate, and scientifically accurate, and always aimed at helping kids feel proud, knowledgeable, and comfortable about their own bodies, about how they were born, and about the family they are part of.
