Book Reviews of Island of the Blue Dolphins

Book Review: An empowering adventure story
Summary: 5 Stars

What a great book! Virtually every part of this book is writing at it's very best.

The setting is magical. Odell seems to tell us about another part of the island and the water with each chapter. I wish he had made a companion book to just explore the island.

The young girl is amazing. She's making spears, building huts, killing devil fish, dogs, and the like, she's exploring nearby islands, trying to escape. There's so many ways to describe her, but the simplest and the best has to be: COURAGOUS.

What I like about this book, is that Odell helps the young reader talk about some issues of life that for many young people is not talked about, subjects like loneliness, independence, loyalty, and death. This is a book that can start a great many discussions between teacher and student, and parent and student.

What makes this book even cooler for me is that it is based in large part on a true story!

I have to say that this book is truly one of, if not the greatest newbery books ever written.

Summary: 5 Stars

Island of the Blue Dolphins is a "must read" for everyone of all ages. Typically, it is a story that falls under the category of Children's Literature, but it is a story in which we can all relate. Karana is a young Indian girl who becomes stranded on her homeland. After a devastating invasion that leaves her and her siblings orphans by the white man her village sets out for safer land elsewhere. But, as the ship is ready to leave she discovers that her brother has been left behind on the island. Refusing to leave him alone she dives into the ocean and returns to the island. The two must now work together in order to survive long enough until the ship returns again for them.
Karana faces many struggles year after year as she continues to hold onto the hope that the ship will return for them one day. Her adventures, determination, and sheer will to survive make this book a real page turner. Together you share her sadnesses and triumphs as though they were your own and discover the power of the human spirit that lies within us all.

If you love survival books, then Island of the Blue Dolphins is for
You! This story is about a girl named Karana who lives in a village called Ghalas-at. Aleuts, or white, male hunters, arrive to take otter. Chief Chowig, the chief of Ghalas-at, makes a deal with the Aleuts. Otter for jewelry and spearheads. When the Aleuts are leaving, they don't give a lot of jewelry and spearheads, so the Aleuts and Indians have a war. The Aleuts won and left with the otter. Later, the survivors and the women left with the kind white men in search for another island. Ramo, Karana's brother, is left behind, so she jumps off the boat to go to him. Later, Ramo even dies! Karana is all alone on the island for years. Can she survive? Will she be rescued? Well read this book to find out! I thought this book was awesome! It had a lot of action and excitement. Once I started reading this book, I didn't want to stop. The genre of this book is realistic fiction. You should read this book if you are nine and up. If you read this book, you won't regret it.

Summary: 5 Stars

This book was about a young girl that lived on a island in a village with her family. The island was in the middle of the ocean where there were many animals and lots of water all around the small island. Then one day a ship came to hut some otter to trade for some goods. The people of the island agreed but when the Alutes were done hunting they didn't give the small Indian village ther fair share. Thats when there was a battel between the two. The Indian lost many people and decided to move to a different place. So later that month a ship came tp pick them up but s tey left they forgot a ypung girl named Karana. She was left on the island for many years. Read this book and find out her adventures.

This book shows her strong will and if you have strenght you can do anything. It shows not to depend on anyoneles and to try not to give up. I liked this book because it was very exciting and it kept you in climax all most the whole time. When I started i couldn't stop. Its a very good story and shows that you can do anything if you try.

Book Review: My Kind of Book
Summary: 5 Stars

Do you like action, fear, drama?? If so then Island of the Blue dolphins is the book for you. This book taught me alot about life.As an Eighth Grader at St. Bede school I know how Karana felt when she was stranded with her brother on an Island. I have also lost a loved one so I know how she felt when she lost her brother. Lonley. She had no one to talk to and it has been proven that being alone too long can lead you to insanity. But because Karana was smart she mad friends with animals on the island and she did not go insane.
Above all this book taught me about courage. When Karana was alone she could not just sit there and wait for the day her ship returned. She got up and created a life on the island she even disobeyed the laws of her tribe that stated no women shall do a mans job. She was brave to do that because the gods were watching her and to break her tribes rules was to break the god rules.
This book was an amazing book with many rules so I advise any pre teen/ teen to read it maybe you'll learn something.
