Book Reviews of Ireland (Eyewitness Travel Guides)Book Review: Good, Well Illustrated Ireland Travel Guide Summary: 4 Stars
The ET Guide combines good, accurate detail on a wide variety of locations with lush, color illustrations throughout. The close-up maps of prime tourist destinations were particularly good. It's not as good as Lonely Planet in covering secondary destinations, but its coverage of the major destinations, such as Dublin, is more focused and more useful for those on short trips.
Book Review: Great Book; great pictures Summary: 4 Stars
This was a great help in planning my trip to Ireland. It was not the only travel book I used, because it has a lot more pictures than text and history. I suggest using this as a supplement to a book rich in history and text. It's very helpful in actually SHOWING the highlights of Ireland.
Book Review: Must have for first time traveler Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this book in preparation for a trip to Ireland, not only our first time there, but our first time in Europe. I had heard the Eyewitness travel books were wonderful, which is why I selected this one. I was not disappointed. It was incredibly helpful; pictures and text.
Book Review: Good the visual reader but not as much info as other guides Summary: 3 Stars
Like many DK books this one does a great job of showing picture layouts of many of the most famous monuments in Ireland.
Some things that this guide does particularly well:
1. The description of the military road between Powerscourt and Glendalough was the best of any guide that I saw.
2. This guide was great for going back a reviewing / reliving places that I visited. It was great when I was going over my photos and writing my journal to look at a diagram of Powerscourt and see visuals of everything.
3. Recommendation ("stars") of not-to-miss places in each site is helpful.
Where this guide is weak, in my opinion:
1. The layout around Dublin can be a bit counterintuitive. Other guides included sites north of Dublin (Trim Castle, Bru na Boyne, etc) as part of the great Dublin area where this guide put them in the mid-Ireland section.
2. The list of restaurants and places to stay is not nearly as exhaustive as in other guides.
3. While pictures are nice for reliving or reviewing places to visit I prefer to have more information than pictures to decide what I want to see.
Book Review: Mehhh Summary: 2 Stars
Although Eyewitness Travel Guides may offer more visual guidance than other guide books, they are still quite terrible. Maps are difficult to read and information is inconsistent.
