In his first novel published in the US, Frank Delaney has given us a gift in the form of the book Ireland. What a masterful journey he provides as he tells the story of two lives together.
The primary character is a storyteller, who spends his life wandering about the country telling the history and tales of a land of long ago. The other of a young lad of 9 Ronan, who becomes entranced by this wondering madrigal of tales, and obsesses to the point of seeking to find the elusive storyteller.
This is a perfect journey through a country that has had its share of sadness and sorrows in its history. As this tale unravels, the book creates an oral perspective of the history of Ireland as it is told, not necessarily in any chronological order. The tales woven are rich in character development and historical in some instances. The morals of each vignette are compelling and yet gentle in the way they are laid before the reader.
This is a book which creates a tension through the development of this young man and his need to create one's self identity as well as view his sense of his world around him.
History - virtually "his story" becomes the focal point in the book as it is told by the Old Storyteller, who is magical, elusive and ever so wise! HIs character is so finely created by Delaney that you wish to seek him out in the countryside where he wanders about.
This book is rich in language, wide in its history and broad in its appeal to readers of all interests! One of the best reads in the past year! I highly recommend this for anyone who seeks a tale to become engulfed by. This is wonderfully entertaining story that takes the reader on this masterful journey!
